I’m back in London! Everything has been going well so far except that I’m nervous about the job interview. I texted Katie and she made me feel better.

BUT and EXCEPT
「～以外に」、「～を除いて」の意味をあらわすbutとexcept
Day6では、butとexceptを紹介します。どちらも簡単な単語だけどどうしてわざわざ？？と思われるかもしれません。
特にbutについては？？と思われるかもしれません。もっとも、これまで見たことのあるbutは「しかし」の意味をもった「接続詞」でしたが、本日学ぶのは、「前置詞」として働くbutについてです。前置詞の but / except / except for は、強い限定語（every / all / any /no / the last ) とセットで使用されると、「～以外に」、「～を除いて」という意味になります。
まず例文を見てみましょう。
■ 基本パターン
例1：Everybody arrived there but/except her.
（彼女以外全員がそこに到着した。）
例2：No one but/except me agreed to the plan.
（私以外誰もその計画に同意しなかった。）
■ 応用パターン
but の後には、動詞の原形や不定詞がくることもあります。
例3：I had no choice but to go there.
（そこに行くこと以外に選択の余地が無かった→そこへ行かざるをえなかった。）
例4：There was nothing for it but to leave NY.
（NYを去ること以外には何も無かった→NYを去るより他になかった。）
また、応用でexcept for は “但し書き”のような用法もあります。
例5：This is a great refrigerator, except for the design.
（デザインを別にすれば、これは素晴らしい冷蔵庫だ。）
例6：The copying of this CD is prohibited except for personal use.
（このCDの複製は禁じられています。なお、個人で楽しむ場合は除かれます。）
