WOULD and WOULDN’T
Brian called me today and we had a nice chat. He invited me to see Wynton Marsalis play at Lincoln Center. He’s one of my favorite jazz musicians, but it sounds like a date. I don’t know if I should go. Katie and I went for coffee and I asked her for advice.
Katie: He asked you out on a date? Really?
Belle: Well, I don’t know for sure. It’s just a jazz show.
Katie: It sounds like a date to me.
Belle: What would you do?
Katie: I would ask him if it’s a date.
Belle: What?! I don’t want to embarrass him!
What did Brian do?
Does Belle want to go with Brian?

WOULD and WOULDN’T
助動詞wouldとwouldn’tについて
Day17では、助動詞wouldとwouldn’tを紹介します。
wouldには、強い意志の意味として「どうしても～しようとした」というニュアンスがあります。
以前PJ1のDay17でも紹介したように、willには名詞として「意志」という意味があります。
例1：I would do the work. （私はどうしてもその仕事をしようとした。）
このニュアンス、分かりますか？なお、助動詞の後ろには、必ず動詞の原形が来ますので、主語が三人称単数でも動詞の最後にsは付けません。
wouldの意味としては、「過去のある時点」で「その時点からみた未来」に対しての強い意志を表しています。否定文は、wouldの後ろにnotを付け、意味は「どうしても～しようとしなかった」となります。
また、スペースが余っているのでこれを機会に、仮定法について簡単にご紹介します。仮定法には、仮定法過去、仮定法過去完了があります（最近では、仮定法現在は解釈としてなくなってきている）。
仮定法過去(Second Conditional)：if + 過去時制, 主語 + would （PJ3-Day17）
If you lent me the money, I would pay you back next week.
（お金を貸してくれたとしたら、来週には返せるのに。）
仮定法過去完了(Third Conditional)：if + had + 過去分詞, 主語 + would + have + 過去分詞 （PJ4-Day19）
If you had studied more, you would have got better marks.
（もっと勉強していれば、もっといい点が取れたのに。）
