可算名詞におけるa few, many, a lot of、不可算名詞におけるa little, much, a lot of
Day 3では、「a few, many, a lot of」と「a little, much, a lot of」の使い分けを紹介します。
many と much は「たくさんの」という意味ですが、many は可算名詞に、much は不可算名詞に対して使います。
例1: She has much money. (moneyは不可算名詞)
例2: I have many friends in Tokyo. (friendは可算名詞)
a few は「少数の」という意味で可算名詞に、a little は「少量の」という意味で、不可算名詞に対して使います。
例3: He has a little money. (moneyは不可算名詞)
例4: She has a few friends in Kanagawa. (friendは可算名詞)
a lot of は「たくさんの」という意味ですが、可算名詞にも不可算名詞にも使えます。(ただし、many と much に比べると少々口語的です)。
例5: He has a lot of money.
例6: She has a lot of friends in Japan.
なお、a few, a littleともに「少しは~ある」という肯定的なニュアンスを持っていることに注意しましょう。
