I recently saw a great movie called District 9 which I thoroughly
recommend! At first, I thought this would be just another typical alien
sci-fi movie, but I was completely blown away by this thought-provoking and
original movie!

最近とてもオススメしたい「第9地区」
というとても良かった映画を見たの！
初めはいつもの同じような感じのエイリアンがでてく るＳＦ映画だと思っていたのだけど
これはとても刺激的でオリジナルの映画だからかなり感動したわ！

 

The story takes place in Johannesburg and was inspired by the director`s
childhood experience of apartheid. The movie grabbed my attention from the
first scene, opening with a documentary-style series of interviews
introducing the back-story:

ストーリーはヨハネスバブルグ（南アフリカ共和国）での出来事で監督が小さい頃に
アパルトヘイト（南アフリカ共和国の人種差別政策）の経 験からひらめいたものだそう。

 

In 1982, an alien ship appears over Johannesburg and hovers there
stationary for 3 months until humans eventually decide to break into the
ship where they find thousands of malnourished and sick aliens. At first,
the aliens are helped by aid workers and housed in a refugee camp. However,
over the next few decades, overcrowded and lacking organisation, the camp
soon deteriorates into a squalorous slum, known as District 9.

1982年、エイリアンの乗った宇宙船がヨハネスブルグに現れ、難民キャンプに
人間達は彼ら（エイリアン）が栄養失調や病気になりその宇宙船に人間達が
侵入するまで3ヶ月間動かずに浮いていたのです。
初めはエイリアン達は救援隊員に助けてもらっていて、難民キャンプ場に
収容されていました。しかし数十年後にはエイリアンも増えすぎてしまい施設も
間に合わなくなってきてしまい、キャンプ場はみすぼらしいスラム街へと悪化してしまい
それが「第9地区」として知られるようになったのです。

 

In 2010, patience for the alien population is running out and the decision
is taken to forcibly evict the 1.8 million strong alien population and
relocate them to a new camp, District 10. The mission is led by protagonist
Wikus Van Der Merwe, a somewhat ineffectual and clueless bureaucrat!
However (without giving too much away!) in the process of his attempts to
evict the aliens, something terrible happens which leads to Wikus
undergoing some dramatic changes….!

2010年に（第９地区の）エイリアンの人口の限度を超えてしまい、強制的に180万のエイリアン達は
強制撤去することを決め、そのエイリアン達は新しい第１０地区のキャンプ場を設立したのです。
主人公のヴィカスがその指揮をとるようにさせられ、けれども彼はちょっと役に立たない、無知な役人なのです！
しかし（あまり教えることはできないけれど！）彼のエイリアンの強制撤去の行動において
彼が何か劇的な展開を導くような恐ろしいことが起こるのです。

 

The special effects are top-knotch despite the movie`s low budget of $30
million, and the unrelenting pace of the movie keeps your eyes glued to thescreen!

特殊効果は３０００万ドルという低い予算での映画にもかかわらずとても
質の高いもので、映画のスクリーンから目が離せないほど映画の勢いが落ちないわよ！

 

However, what impressed me most about this movie was first-time actor
Sharlto Copley who plays lead character Wikus, and who ad-libbed most of
his dialogue! At first, Wikus is portrayed as pathetic; a clueless
bureaucrat who couldn`t really care less about the aliens. He treats the
aliens with contempt and takes joy in evicting them. However, I was
completely engrossed by his transformation from smarmy civil servant to
someone I actually felt sorry for.

しかし、私を一番感動させたのは初めて俳優としてヴィカスを演じた
シャルト・コプリーのセリフがほとんどアドリブだということなの！
初めは、ヴィカスは本当にエイリアン達を気にしない哀れで無知な役人として描かれたそう。
彼はエイリアン達の強制撤去に軽蔑や面白さをもって扱っていた。
しかし、私は彼をごまをすってばかりの公務員だったこと残念に思ったけれど
途中から変貌した彼に夢中になったわ。

 

This movie is definitely a must see for 2010, an utterly compelling
examination of human nature that will take you on an emotional
rollercoaster!

この映画は絶対に2010年に見るべきよ、
（映画のストーリーにアップダウンがあり）激しいローラーコースターに
乗ってしまうような感じで完全に人間性を抑えきれなくなるわよ！
