When I say I can speak French, I notice that people are always very surprised and ask me why.
In Canada, we have two official languages: English and French.
However, most Canadians can’t speak French at all, or very few words.
Only 20% of Canadians can speak French.
If you go to Vancouver or Toronto, most people will only be able to talk in English.
The reason is that French is spoken only in Quebec, one of the Canadian provinces on the East side.
People from Quebec are called ” Quebecois” ( pronounced : Ke-be-kua) or French Canadians!
私がフランス語を話せると言うといつもとても驚かれ、それから「どうして話せるの？」と聞かれるわ。
カナダには英語とフランス語のふたつの公用語があるの。
でもほとんどのカナダ人はフランス語をまったく話せないか、少し単語が話せるくらいだわ。
フランス語を話すカナダ人はたったの20％なの。
バンクーバーやトロントに行っても、ほとんどの人が英語でしか会話しないわ。
なぜかというと、フランス語はカナダの東側の州のひとつであるケベック州でしか使われていないからなの。
ケベック州出身の人は「Quebecois（発音：ケ・ベ・クア）」とか「フレンチカナディアン」と呼ばれているわ！

If you look at the History of Canada, you will find out that a long time ago, Canada was actually a country ruled by France until England took Canada.
However, because there were a lot of French already living in Quebec at that time, the French language was protected.
Today, French is still very important in Quebec.
その昔、カナダはイギリスの植民地にされる以前にはフランスに支配されていた歴史があるの。
でも当時のケベック州にはすでに多くのフランス人が住んでいたので、フランス語は使い続けられたのね。
現在でもケベック州においてはフランス語はとっても重要なの。

In Montreal, the city where I come from, most people are perfectly bilingual.
Did you know that the Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau is also a French Canadian from Montreal?
He is famous all over the world for being a cool and handsome prime minister!
私の故郷のモントリオールではほとんどの人が完璧なバイリンガルだわ。
カナダの首相のジャスティン・トルドーもモントリオール出身のフランス系カナダ人だってご存知かしら？
彼はクールでハンサムな首相として、世界中で有名よね！

I think Quebec has a very unique culture in North America and even in Canada.
For example, because Montreal and Quebec city are the oldest cities in Canada, they also have old towns with a very strong French style.
You can’t find the same style anywhere else in North America.
Just like Tokyo used to be called Edo, Montreal also had a different name and used to be called “Ville-Marie”, which means “Mary City” in French.
ケベック州は北米やカナダの中でもとてもユニークな文化を持っていると思うの。
モントリオールやケベック市はカナダで最も古い都市でフランスの特徴が色濃く残る街並みがあるわ。
似たような景色は北米のどこにもないわね。
かつて東京が江戸と呼ばれていたように、モントリオールも以前はフランス語で「マリー（マリア）の街」を意味する「Ville-Marie（ヴィル・マリー）」という今とは違う呼ばれ方をしていたんですって。

It is very far from Tokyo, but I recommend you to visit Montreal or Quebec city one day!
Autumn is the best time to visit for all the beautiful autumn colors!
In 2016, a popular Korean drama called “Tokkebi” had a lot of scenes in Quebec city.
If you watch this drama, you can see how beautiful and unique the style of buildings are compared to other big cities in Canada or in the U.S.
東京からはとても遠いけれどもぜひモントリオールやケベック市に行って欲しいな！
きれいな紅葉が見られる秋は、訪れるのにベストな時期よ！
2016年の韓国の人気ドラマ『トッケビ』でもケベック市のシーンがたくさん出てきたわ。
このドラマを観れば、カナダやアメリカの他の大都市と比べても、この街の建築スタイルがどれほど美しくユニークであるか分かってもらえると思うな！
