It’s that hot, hot season again, and a rare member of my wardrobe is finally back in style: the Hawaiian shirt – or “Aloha Shirt”.
But even though long ago I was a surfer myself, it’s actually not the sand and waves that these colorful tropical shirts make me remember.
Instead, it’s my time working behind the bar!
今年も暑い暑い季節がやってきたから、僕のワードローブにしては珍しくハワイアン・シャツ、つまりアロハシャツを復活させたんだ。
でもね、僕はサーファーだったのに、カラフルなトロピカル・シャツの思い出は砂や波ではないんです。
代わりに思い出すのは、バーで働いていた頃のことなんです！

For me, the Aloha shirt brings to mind Tiki Culture.
Tiki is a style and subculture that came out of the US before and after the war.
It’s a blended style inspired by the cultures and arts of the islands of the Pacific, from Polynesia to Hawaii (and the Caribbean islands too).
Wood carvings, straw roofed huts, lei necklaces and tropical plants are key images in Tiki – and probably many of you have already seen this style in Disneyland’s famous “Tiki Room”!
僕にとってアロハシャツはティキカルチャーを思い起こさせます。
ティキは戦前から戦後にかけてアメリカで生まれたスタイルとサブカルチャーなんだ。
ティキはポリネシアからハワイ（およびカリブ海の島々）までの太平洋諸島の文化や芸術に触発され、混じり合ったスタイルです。
木彫り、茅葺きの小屋、レイの首飾り、熱帯植物がティキの重要なモチーフなんだけど、このスタイルをディズニーランドの有名な『ティキルーム』でご覧になったことがある方も多いでしょう！

A big part of this Tiki aesthetic in the US became centered around “Tiki Bars”.
In these bars, themed much like some imagined tropical island cabana, your bartender wearing a loud Aloha shirt served a whole list of exotic-sounding cocktails.
Some of the most famous “tropical drinks” got big through this culture – like the Mai Tai, the Singapore Sling, the Zombie, the Blue Hawaii.
アメリカにおけるこのティキカルチャーの大部分は「ティキ・バー」が中心になったんだ。
ティキ・バーでは、熱帯の島のプライベートスペースをテーマにしていて、派手なアロハシャツ姿のバーテンダーがエキゾチックな響きのカクテルを提供していたよ。
マイタイやシンガポール・スリング、ゾンビ、ブルー・ハワイなどのすごく有名なトロピカルドリンクは、このカルチャーを通じて大流行したんだ。

I didn’t work in a Tiki bar, but occasionally customers would order such drinks – especially on days as hot as recently!
To be honest, the sheer amount of fruits, juices, and mixers these drinks need make them a hassle in a normal bar (and a real challenge at your home bar!).
But a well done tropical drink is always a real eye-catcher!
僕が働いていたのはティキ・バーではなかったんだけど、こんな暑い日には、お客さんがそういうドリンクを注文することが時折ありました。
正直言うと、フルーツやジュース、ミキサーがたくさん必要だから、普通のバーでは手間が掛かって大変なんだ（自宅で作るのはもっと大変！）。
でも、上手に作られたトロピカル・ドリンクはいつでも魅力的ですからね。
