■Love & Basketball (2000)

Love & Basketball is a real movie gem that superbly covers the hardships of balancing love and romance with the personal needs and the pursuit of one’s dreams.

The film tells the story of childhood sweethearts Monica Wright and Quincy McCall who both share the same passion for basketball.

The movie is broken into four parts:

the first part depicts their childhood when they first meet and become friends;

the second part, shows their lives at highschool where they are both leaders of their respective basket ball teams, Quincy becoming popular while Monica struggles to control her emotions on the court while also dealing with the pressure from her mother to focus on being more feminine;

the third part takes during freshman year of college, where they are students at the same university, USC (University of Southern California) and also a couple;

and the final part takes place during their professional lives as basketball players, Quincy playing as a bench player for the Los Angeles Lakers while Monica plays for the International Women’s Basketball Association in Barcelona, Spain.

The movie does well to portray the different hardships of both characters and touches upon issues of gender equality and romance.

幼少期のモニカ・ライトとバスケットボールにも情熱を捧げるクィンシー・マコールの物語です。

またこの映画は4部構成となっています。

1つ目は、彼らが出会い、友達になる幼い頃を描いています。

2つ目は、彼の通う学校でそれぞれがリーダーとして率いるバスケットチームを映し出しています。クィンシーは、ともて人気者になりその一方でモニカはコート上で感情のコントロールができず苦しみます。モニカの母は彼女にもっと女性らしくなることを求め、その母からのプレッシャーをも抑えようとしています。

3つ目は、USC (University of Southern California)の同じ大学に通う新入生時代を描き、恋人同士になっていきます。

最後は、彼らがプロバスケットボールプレイヤーになったときを描き、クィンシーはLos Angeles Lakersでの控え選手、一方モニカはスペインはバルセロナにある国際女子バスケットボール協会でプレイをしています。 この映画は、ロマンスや男女平等問題、またそれぞれの異なる困難をとてもうまく表現しています。

■10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

This movie is a marvelously delightful teen love comedy.

It features such talent as the late, great Heath Ledger, the superbly talented Julia Stiles, the gifted Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the lovely Larisa Oleynik who all give wonderful performances in this tale of high school love and drama.

The movie, based on the Shakespearean play The Taming of the Shrew, depicts the troubles of the Stratford sisters, Kat and Bianca.

Their father is over-protective, refusing to allow Kat to attend the university she wants to go because he thinks it is too far away and not allowing Bianca to go out on dates unless her older sister, who has no interest in romance or high school boys, does.

Enter Cameron James, a new student at their school who falls for Bianca and devises a way to get the school bad boy, Patrick Verona, to woo Kat. The movie is light-hearted fun and my favorite teen love comedy. 10 Things I Hate About You

今亡き素晴らしい才能を持ったヒース・レジャーと類まれなる才能を持つジュリア・スタイルス、優れた才能を持つジョセフ・ゴードンに、愛らしいレヴィット　ラリサ・オリニックなど豪華俳優陣が出ています。

この映画はシェイクスピアの「The Taming of the Shrew（じゃじゃ馬ならし）」がもととなっており、ストラトスフォード姉妹のトラブルを描きます。

彼女たちの父親はとても過保護で、様々な形でストーリーに影響を与えるのです。 姉のキャットには行きたい大学が遠いことが理由で、通わせてくれなかったり妹のビアンカには姉のキャットが先に彼氏を作らないとビアンカには許さなかったり。

そんなある日転校生のキャメロン・ジェームスが妹のビアンカに片思いを抱き、ある作戦を練るのです。 それは学校のモテ男のパトリック・ベロナを姉キャットに求愛をさせ、カップル成立狙って妹のビアンカを自分のものにしようとするものです。 この映画は気軽に楽しめ、僕のお気に入りの若者のラブコメディーです。

■Pretty Woman (1990)

Considered one of the greatest love comedies of all time, Pretty Woman owes its prestigious status to the wonderful onscreen chemistry between Richard Gere and Julia Roberts.

Richard Gere plays the part of Edward Lewis, a successful business man who hires the hooker Vivian Ward, played by Julia Roberts, to be his escort to various parties and social events for the week.

What was initially a relationship of convenience blossoms into a true romance;

the encounter indelibly changes the two.

The movie is often noted to have launched Julia Roberts into stardom and she definitely enchanted me when I was younger with her charming smile and cheerful aura.

Pretty Woman

歴史上最高のラブコメディーであると評価されておりPretty Womanはリチャード・ギアとジュリア・ロバーツの化学反応が織りなすコンビは素晴らしく、名声と地位のある映画です。

リチャード・ギアは、1週間様々なパーティーや社会的イベントにエスコートしてもらうため、街中のストリート・ガールをしているジュリア・ロバーツ演じるビビアン・ウォードを雇う地位のあるビジネスマン、エドワード・ルイスを演じます。

元々都合の良い関係だったけれど、二人の偶然的な出会いが真実の愛へと変わっていきます。

この映画によってジュリア・ロバーツはスターの座を掴み、またまだ若かった僕は完全に彼女のチャーミングな笑顔と可愛らしいオーラに魅了させられました。

■How to Lose a Guy in 10 days (2003)

A love comedy with a funny premise, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is a light-hearted romp that takes two very ambitious people, Andie Anderson (played by Kate Hudson) and Benjamin Barry (played by Matthew McConaughey) who start dating each other for less than noble reasons.

Andie is a writer for a women’s magazine who agrees to write an article called “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” where she will try to make a guy break up with her within 10 days by doing things that men find irritating or undesirable;

meanwhile, Ben is an advertising executive who makes a bet that he can make any woman fall in love with him before the company ball (which also happens to be in 10 days) in order to win the rights to head advertising campaign for a diamond company. Unaware of each others’ true intentions, the two begin dating and mayhem ensues.

Andie does everything she can to try to get Ben to break up with her but Ben, not wanting to lose the bet, does his best to acquiesce to her outrageous demands and behavior. Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey make a great onscreen pair and the movie is quite well paced and fun.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 days (2003)

ラブコメディーの先駆けともいえる、10日間で男を上手にフル方法は気軽に楽しめるどたばた劇で、ケイトハドソン演じるアンディー・アンダーソンとマシュー・マコノヒー演じるベンジャミン・ベリーは特に特別な理由もなく付き合い始めます。

アンディーは女性誌の女性記者で、10日間以内にわざと男にふられてその内容を記事にするという厄介ない仕事をしています。一方でベンは10日間以内に恋人を作れば大きな仕事を任せるというダイアモンド社の広告キャンペーンの代表権利を獲得るための賭けをし、会社のダンスパーティまでに誰でも良いから恋人を作ろうとしています。

アンディーはベンと別れるためであればわがままやスネルことなどんなことでも試し、ベンはこの賭けに負けるわけにはいかないと、彼女の無理な要求にすべて答えようと奮闘します。お互いに本当の目的に気が付かないまま、付き合いが始まっていくのです。 ケイト・ハドソンとマシューマコノヒーはこの映画で最高なコンビを演じ、面白おかしく映画は進んでいきます。

■Before Sunrise (1995)

A very simple, unassuming movie about two strangers who meet on a train and decide to spend the night together wondering the streets of Vienna talking about life and love. Charming in its simplicity, the film captures the sense of wonder and possibility that happens when two lost souls meet and open up to each other.

こちらはともてシンプルで、飾らない映画です。旅先の列車で出会った二人の男女が、ウィーンの夜の町を散歩しながら人生や愛を語る物語です。この映画は、傷ついた2人が出会い、お互い心を開いた時に生まれる愛と希望を映し出した、単純だけど魅力的な映画です。
