Occasionally a student will ask me ways they can supplement their English studies and one way that I am particularly fond of is reading comics.
The reason for this is that comics are often composed primarily of speech, tend to be less dense than novels and relatively easier to read.
メンバーの皆さんに英語の勉強の為に何をすればいいかとよく聞かれますが、そのひとつとしてコミックを読むことをオススメします。
コミックは会話を中心に構成されているし、小説より読みやすいことが多いからです。

There are, of course, many different kinds of comics but for beginner level students I recommend reading slice of life comic strips as they are driven primarily through conversation between characters and a lot of the conversation patterns are related to simple, daily life matters.
もちろん、いろんな種類のコミックがありますが、初心者レベルの皆さんには、登場人物達の会話で繰り広げられるちょっとした日常生活を描いたコミック・ストリップ（*新聞や雑誌などに掲載される4コマ漫画やスヌーピーのようなコマ割り漫画）がオススメです。

◆How to study using comics◆
漫画での勉強の仕方

First and foremost, it is important you choose a comic that interests you but is not too difficult.
A lot of comic strips are usually short, 4 panel strips that make for a quick, easy read.
何よりも一番大切なのは、興味を持てる難しすぎないコミックを選ぶ事です。
コミック・ストリップはサクッと読める短い4コマ漫画が多いです。

Take for example, this comic strip from Dixie Dugan
Reading this comic strip should take about one or two minutes.
Now obviously, the comic strip will often have words or phrases you are not familiar with which is a good thing as it will help you expand your knowledge of vocabulary, phrases and slang.
I recommend using a notebook or a memo app to keep track of words and phrases you find interesting or useful.
例えば、『Dixie Dugan（ディキシー・デュガン）』です。
コミック・ストリップは1.2分で読めちゃいます。
日頃使い慣れていない単語やフレーズも出てくると思うけど、それが単語やフレーズ、スラングの知識を広げてくれる鍵なのです。
興味を持ったり、使えると思った単語やフレーズを覚える為にはノートやメモアプリを使うといいですよ。

Let’s go over each panel:
それではひとコマずつみていきましょう

★Panel 1：1コマめ
Von (the man) : I’m afraid I’ve got bad news for you, Dixie.
ヴォン（男性）：ディキシーに悪い知らせをしなければならないんだ。

Dixie (the woman): Shoot the works – What is it, Von?
ディキシー（女性）：正直に言って！何の話かしら、ヴォン？

Sometimes a word or phrase will have multiple meanings, like the phrase “Shoot the works”.
Nowadays, it is commonly used to mean “とことんやる” but from the context of the comic panel we can infer that she means “正直に言って”.
The word “afraid” usually means “怖い” but in this context it means “残念ながら”.
この”Shoot the works”のように単語やフレーズが、場面によって異なる意味で使われることがあります。
通常は「とことんやる」という意味で使われることは多いけど、コミックの文脈から、「正直に言って」という意味だと判断出来ます。
また、”afraid”は通常「怖い」という意味ですが、文脈から「残念ながら」という意味だと分かりますよね。

When coming upon a word or phrase with multiple meanings, it is important to figure out which meaning is being used.

複数の意味を持つ単語やフレーズに出くわしたとき、どの意味で使われているかを理解するのが大切です。
どう意味か理解するのに困ったらいつでもレッスンパートナーに聞いてくださいね。

★Panel 2：2コマめ
Von: We’re all going back North tomorrow.
ヴォン：明日みんなで北に帰るんだ。

Dixie: That’s not so bad, that’s good.
ディキシー：悪くないわ。いいじゃない・

★Panel 3：3コマめ

Von: But that isn’t all. When we get back, you’re through.
ヴォン：でもそれだけじゃないよ。戻ったら君は終わりなんだ。

Dixie: You mean I haven’t any job anymore???
ディキシー：もう私に仕事はないっていう意味？

★Panel 4：4コマめ

Von: That’s about the size of it. I’m sorry.
ヴォン：まぁそんなところ。悪いな。

Dixie: And I lost all my money at the races yesterday.
ディキシー：その上、昨日レースに負けてすっからかんになっちゃったし。

After reading through the comic and looking up words or phrases you are not familiar with, I recommend taking the time to read the comic out loud.
I know it might sound a bit odd, but if your goal is to improve your English speaking skills then this is of the utmost importance.
Just imagine you are an actor preparing for an important job or that you are reading a story to a small child.
If you are up for it, give each character a distinct voice when you read aloud.
Doing so will help you improve your speech fluency, pronunciation, ability to remember vocabulary and confidence.
It’s alright if it’s not perfect at first. Just relax and try to have fun.
And remember, the only thing stopping you from reaching your goals is yourself.
コミックを読んで、分からない単語やフレーズを調べたら、今度は声に出して読んでみてください。
しっくりこないかも知れないですが、英語のスピーキング力を上げたいのであれば、絶対に必要なことなんです。
俳優が大役の練習をしていたり、小さな子に物語を読んであげるような感じで。
登場人物になりきってを声色を変えて読んだりするのもいいでしょう。
そうすることによって、自然な話し方や発音、単語力が身につき、自信を持つことが出来ます。
最初から完璧じゃなくても大丈夫です。リラックスして楽しんでやってみてください。
自分の目標達成をジャマするのは自分自身だけなんだと心に留めておきましょう！

マイク流コミック・ストリップ勉強法

1. Find a comic strip you enjoy
2. Read one strip a day
3. Look up any words or phrases you don’t know (or ask a Lesson Partner if you are having difficulty understanding the meaning)
4. Write down words and phrases you think will be useful or that you like in a notebook or on your smartphone
5. Practice reading the comic aloud (2 or 3 times)
6. Review the words and phrases you have learned at the end of the week
1. 楽しめるコミック・ストリップを探す
2. 一日ひとつのストリップを読む
3. 知らない単語やフレーズを調べる（分からない時じゃレッスンパートナーに聞いてみち）
4. ノートやスマホアプリに便利だったりいいなと思う単語やフレーズを書き留める
5. 声に出して読む練習をする（2～3回）
6. 週の終わりに学んだ単語とフレーズを復習する

Altogether, it should take 10-20 minutes a day depending on the length of the comic strip (sometimes even less, if there aren’t many words in the comic).
コミック・ストリップの長さによりますが毎日10分から20分ぐらいの時間でしょう。
（知らない単語があまりない日はそんなに時間が掛かりません）
