Hi everyone! My name is Lara and I’m from a small town called Rees in the West of Germany and then moved to a big city, called Duesseldorf for university.
I also studied and lived in England because I got my Masters degree in English literature there.
I grew up in the countryside, surrounded by beautiful nature and very kind people.
Germany is famous for many things: Everyone seems to love our beer and our sausages.
While I agree that these things are great, Germany has so much more to offer!
はじめまして！ララです。ドイツの西部にある小さな町、リース出身で、大学進学の際にデュッセルドルフという大都市に引っ越しました。
また、英文学の修士号を取得するためにイギリスでの留学経験もあります。美しい自然ととても親切な人々に囲まれて田舎で育ちました。
ドイツは有名なものがたくさんあり、特にドイツのビールとソーセージは人気ですね。
確かにそれは素晴らしいものですが、ドイツにはそれ以外にもたくさんの魅力が広がっているんですよ！

For example, Christmas Markets originated in Germany and are well-known around the world!
Every city, even very small ones, have their own Christmas Markets where you can enjoy delicious foods and drinks, as well as beautiful little shops selling decorations and sweets.
たとえば、クリスマスマーケットはドイツ発祥のもので、世界中で知られています！
どの街にも、どんなに小さな街にも、それぞれのクリスマスマーケットがあって、美味しい食べ物や飲み物、そしてデコレーションやお菓子を売っている素敵な小さなお店を楽しむことができます。

People like to go there after work, or on the weekend, and drink some hot mulled wine or eat some typical Christmas Market food, like sausages and bread or fried potatoes.
Mulled wine is hot red (or sometimes white) wine with sugar and spices, like cinnamon and star anise.
It’s very sweet and fragrant.
仕事の後や週末になると、人々はそこに行って、ホットワインやソーセージ、パン、またはフライドポテトなど、クリスマスマーケットならではの食べ物を楽しみます。
ホットワインは、熱い赤（時には白も）ワインに砂糖やシナモン、スターアニスなどのスパイスが加えられたものです。
とても甘く、いい香りなんですよ。

There are also many kinds of mulled wine, some have apple pieces inside and others are made with blueberries!
There are also hot drinks without alcohol, so everyone can enjoy them – even kids.
その他にも、リンゴやブルーベリーを使用したりといろいろな種類のホットワインがあります！
アルコールが入っていないホットドリンクもあるので、子どもを含めみんなで楽しむことができます。

Another part about German culture that I really enjoy is our love for bread!
There are so many great bakeries in Germany and our bread is really different from other places in the world.
For example, there is Roggenbrot, which is very dark and not sweet at all.
The crust is very crispy but the inside is soft, and we like to eat it with cheese or ham.
Other people also like to eat it with jam or honey and butter.
ドイツの文化でもうひとつ私が好きなのは、パンへの愛情です！
ドイツには素晴らしいベーカリーがたくさんありますが、ドイツのパンは世界の他の国とは全く違うんです。
たとえば、「Roggenbrot（ロッゲンブロート：ライ麦パン）」はとても濃い色をした一切甘くないパンです。
皮はパリッとしていて中は柔らかく、チーズやハムと一緒に食べるのが好きです。
中にはジャムやハチミツと一緒にバターを付けて食べるのが好きな人もいます。

Another type of bread is Schwarzbrot, which is a bread that is almost black in colour and has a very strong taste.
People usually eat it with lots of butter and cheese.
Aside from these, we also have a lot of unique cakes, like Donauwellen, Frankfurter Kranz or Marmorkuchen.
もう一種類、ほぼ真っ黒で、とても味わい深い「Schwarzbrot（シュヴァルツブロート）」というパンがあります。
バターやチーズをたっぷりつけて食べるのが一般的です。
その他には、「Donauwellen（ドーナウウェーレン）」や「Frankfurter Kranz（フランクフルター・クランツ）」、そして「Marmorkuchen（マーモルクーヘン）」のようなユニークなケーキも色々あるんですよ。

Donauwellen are made with a layer of vanilla and chocolate sponge, with a pudding-like cream on top and fresh cherries inside, topped with another layer of thick chocolate ganache.
「Donauwellen（ドーナウウェーレン）」は、バニラとチョコレートのスポンジを重ね、その上にプリンのようなクリームと新鮮なさくらんぼが入れ、さらにその上に濃厚なチョコレートガナッシュを重ねたものです。

Frankfurter Kranz on the other hand is a vanilla sponge, cut in half and filled with buttercream and jam.
We also add candied hazelnut pieces to the outside, as well.
Finally, Marmorkuchen is a mix of a vanilla and chocolate sponge, with rum inside and covered in dark chocolate.

「Frankfurter Kranz（フランクフルター・クランツ）」は半分に切ったバニラ・スポンジにバタークリームとジャムで詰めたものです。外側には砂糖漬けの砕いたヘーゼルナッツをつけます。

最後に「Marmorkuchen（マーモルクーヘン）」はバニラとチョコレートのスポンジのミックスの中にラム酒を入れ、ダークチョコレートで覆ったものです。

In Rees, where I grew up, you can do a lot of cycling as it is famous for many beautiful cycling paths.
In addition to this, the city is located right next to one of Germany’s biggest rivers (the Rhine) and you can even take a ferry or walk around the harbour to enjoy the fresh air.
私が育ったリースには、美しいサイクリングコースがたくさんあることで有名で、サイクリングを楽しむのにぴったりです。
さらに、この街はドイツ有数の大河（ライン川）のすぐそばに位置しているから、フェリーに乗ったり、港を散歩したりして新鮮な空気を味わいリラックスできます。

Rees is also incredibly close to the Netherlands, so when I was younger, my parents used to take me there to go shopping and sightseeing. Even Amsterdam is only one hour away, so visiting Amsterdam and coming back in the evening is all possible in one day!
リースはオランダに非常に近いので、子どもの頃、両親は私をショッピングや観光に連れて行ってくれました。
アムステルダムもたった1時間なので、アムステルダムに行っても夕方には帰ってこれるんですよ！

Duesseldorf, where I went to university and where I used to live before I came to Japan, is roughly one hour from Rees.
It is also the capital of the state and a very famous city in Germany!
We have many great museums, art galleries and a beautiful theatre and opera.
If you like shopping, there is the “Koenigsallee”, which is a famous street lined by beautiful trees and a river, with lots of shops to shop for clothes and accessories.
デュッセルドルフは、私が大学に通い、日本に来る前に住んでいたところで、リースからだいたい1時間のところにあります。
ドイツの州の首都でもあるデュッセルドルフは、ドイツではとても有名な都市です！
素晴らしい博物館や美術館、、美しい劇場やオペラハウスがたくさんあります。
ショッピングがお好きな方には「Koenigsallee（ケーニヒスアレー）」があります。この通りは美しい木々と川に囲まれた有名な通りで、洋服やアクセサリーのお店がたくさんあります。

There is also a very large Japanese community and approximately 11.000 Japanese people live there now.
It is the biggest Japanese community in continental Europe!
There are so many Japanese restaurants and even Japanese supermarkets, dry cleaners and bakeries!
This is how I became more interested in Japanese culture and so I took a language class at university and loved it.
I enjoyed studying Japanese so much, that I decided to take a semester abroad in Tokyo during my Bachelor degree.
When I was young, I also watched a lot of anime like Sailor Moon or Detektive Conan, so I think I was interested in Japanese culture from an early age on.
デュッセルドルフには非常に大きな日本人コミュニティがあり、約11,000人の日本人が住んでいます。
これはヨーロッパ大陸で最大の日本人コミュニティです！
日本食レストランや日本のスーパーマーケット、クリーニング店、そしてベーカリーがたくさんあります。
これが私が日本の文化に興味を持つきっかけとなり、大学で日本語の授業を受け、ハマりました。
日本語の勉強がとても楽しかったので、学部の間に東京で1学期留学することを決めました。
セーラームーンや名探偵コナンなどのアニメもよく見ていたので、幼少期から日本の文化に興味があったのだと思います。

I now live in Japan with my beloved hostfamily, who I met in 2017 when I was studying Japanese at a language school.
I don’t like living alone, so for me it is so nice to live together with a sweet family and to be able to practice Japanese every day.
I live in Fuchu, and while it is still Tokyo, I feel like I live in a very calm and more rural area.
There, I like to go running, to play with my hostfamily’s kids, and to cook or bake delicious things while listening to Jazz music.
I am a vegetarian, so I’m always interested in learning how to make more delicious dishes with a lot of veggies and tofu.
私は今、2017年に語学学校で日本語を勉強していた時に出会った大好きなホストファミリーと日本で暮らしています。
一人暮らしが苦手な私にとって、優しい家族と一緒に暮らし、毎日日本語の練習ができるのはとても嬉しいことです。
私は府中に住んでいますが、東京とはいえ、とても落ち着いた田舎に住んでいるような気がします。
そこでランニングをしたり、ホストファミリーの子どもたちと遊んだり、ジャズを聴きながらおいしいものを作ったり焼いたりするのが好きです。
私はベジタリアンなので、野菜や豆腐をたくさん使ったおいしい料理の作り方をどんどん学びたいと思っています。

In Germany, I was already working as an English teacher for four years, and it was always my dream to come back to Japan and teach English to Japanese students!
I am so happy that I can do this now, it is truly a dream come true.
