Happy New Year everyone!
How do you spend your New Year holiday?
In the US, it is a time to celebrate and party with friends, family and in some cases, with complete strangers downtown.
When I first moved to Japan, some students invited me to their family’s home to celebrate Japanese New Year.
We sat outside and chatted as mochi was being made, and their grandmother also taught me how to make New Year’s soba from scratch!
It’s one of my first fondest memories of living in Japan.

お正月休みはいかがお過ごしですか？
アメリカでは、友人や家族と一緒に、時には街中で知らない人たちとも一緒にパーティーを楽しむ時期なんですよ。
日本に初めて引っ越してきた時、学校の友人達の中には日本の新年を一緒にお祝いするために私のことを実家に招待してくれた人もいました。
お餅つきをしながら外でおしゃべりしたり、おばあちゃんに年越しそばの作り方も一から教えてもらいました！
それは日本に来て最初の楽しい思い出のひとつになりました。

One of my friends from university in the US moved to Hyogo the following year, so every year since then, we would meet somewhere in Japan and travel during the Christmas and New Year holidays since we couldn’t be with our families.
私の大学の友人の一人がアメリカから兵庫に引っ越して来たのはその翌年でした。それ以来毎年、クリスマスや年末年始はアメリカの家族と一緒にいられない分、私たちは日本のどこかで集まって旅行を楽しんでいます。

One year, we met in Matsuyama, Ehime with another friend from university.
Then, the number of infections was low there, and it was more convenient for them since they were both living in west Japan.
We exchanged souvenirs from our prefectures and explored the city including Matsuyama Castle, Dogo Onsen and a restaurant where we could eat sea bream rice (鯛めし).
ある年私たちは、大学時代の別の友人と愛媛県の松山市で合流しました。
当時はコロナの感染者数も少なかったし、二人とも西日本に住んでいたので都合がよかったのです。
お互いの県のお土産を交換し、松山城や道後温泉、鯛めしが食べられるお店など市内を散策しました。

It had been a while since we experienced snow like back home in Vermont, so in 2022, we decided to meet in Sapporo for New Year’s.
Even though we had never been to Hokkaido before, the environment felt nostalgic for us.
We went to the Sapporo Clock Tower, Shiroi Koibito Park, Hokkaido Shrine, Sapporo TV Tower and spent a day in Otaru.
バーモント州の故郷のような雪を長く経験していなかったので、2022年の新年は札幌で迎えることにしました。
初めての北海道でしたが、なんだか懐かしい雰囲気が漂っていました。
札幌時計台や白い恋人パーク、北海道神宮、さっぽろテレビ塔に行ったり、小樽で一日過ごしたりました。

When it was time to say goodbye, we parted ways and I continued on my journey back to Tochigi.
Along the way, I stopped by Hakodate, Shin-Aomori, Morioka, Sendai and Matsushima.It was a long but very fulfilling trip.
友人たちと解散後、栃木までの帰り道に一人で旅行を続けました。
帰りの道中、函館や新青森、盛岡、仙台、松島に立ち寄りました。長かったですがとても充実した旅でした。

We try to meet whenever we have a long holiday, but the last two trips we went on cost quite a lot…
Which is why for the 2023 New Year holiday, we decided to have a staycation, instead.
友人とは長期休暇には必ず会うようにしていますが、過去2回の旅行はかなりお金がかかってしまいました…。
そこで、2023年の年末年始はステイケーション（近場で休暇を楽しむこと）をすることにしました。

Initially, I had no plans to go anywhere, but my boyfriend and I spontaneously decided to visit his family in Miyagi.
It was my first time having the Japanese New Year’s dishes ozoni and osechi.
His parents brought us sightseeing to various temples and shrines in Hirazumi, Fukushima, and we visited various relatives in his hometown.
We also took a day to visit Toshogu Shrine in Sendai and Yamadera in Yamagata with his sister.
When I visited Sendai in the previous year, my New Year’s fortune (おみくじ）wasn’t very good, so I bought a dream-granting charm just in case.
当初はどこにも行く予定はなかったのですが、流れでボーイフレンドと二人で宮城の彼の家族に会いに行くことにしました。
そこで初めてお雑煮やおせち料理をいただきました。
彼の両親は福島県の平泉にあるさまざまな寺社を見学するために私たちを案内してくれ、彼の故郷にある親戚の家を訪ねたりもしました。
また、彼の妹と一緒に仙台東照宮や山形の山寺にも一日かけて観光しました。
前の年に仙台を訪れた時に買ったおみくじはあまり良くありませんでしたので、もう一度、夢をかなえるお守りを購入しました。

At the time, I never imagined the following year I would be visiting there again with my boyfriend and his sister.
It’s too strange to be a coincidence, but it’s interesting how some things come full circle.
1年前（に仙台を一人旅行した時）には、翌年にボーイフレンドと彼の妹と一緒に再びそこを訪れることになるなんて夢にも思いませんでした。
偶然にしてはあまりにも不思議だけど、物事には巡り合わせがあるものですね。
