In my home country of Denmark, winter is very dark because the nights are long.
In turn, the nights in summer are very short.
In midsummer, the longest days are around 18 hours long, and the sun doesn’t start to set before 10:00 in the evening.
私の母国のデンマークでは、冬は夜がとても長く、暗い時間が続きます。
反対に、夏は夜がとても短いです。
真夏になると、一番長い日には昼間の時間が約18時間続き、夜の10時近くになっても日没が始まりません。

My preferred place to spend the summer is deep in the woods of Sweden where my family has an Ødegård.
This translates as an abandoned farm.
There are many of these houses in Sweden that were built for small-scale family farming, but as agriculture changed and new methods of farming were invented these houses were abandoned.
夏になると、スウェーデンの森の奥深くにある、家族が所有している「Ødegård（廃農場）で過ごすのが大好きでした。
「Ødegård」は廃農場（かつて農業が行われていたが現在は使用されておらず、放置された状態の農地や建物を指します）を意味します。
スウェーデンには、かつて小規模な家族農業向けに建てられた多くのこのような家がありますが、農業が変化し新しい農法が導入されると、これらの家は放置されるようになりました。

Some, however, have found new use as summer retreats.
My family’s house was built so deep in the woods that even today there is no electricity or heating.
Water can only be gotten from a well and all food is cooked over an iron stove heated by burning wood.
しかし、一部の家は夏の避暑地として新たな使われ方をされるようになりました。
私の家族の家は森の奥深くに建てられていて、今でも電気も暖房もありません。
水は井戸から汲み上げるしかありませんし、食べ物はすべて薪をくべた鉄のストーブで調理します。

The house is built right at the edge of a nature reserve called Granhultsberget, which means Pine Tree Mountain.
As you might guess, it is a mountain covered in pine trees.
If you want, you can hike and see a beautiful view from atop the mountain.
家は「松の木の山」という意味を持つ「グランフルツベルゲト」と呼ばれる自然保護区の端に建てられています。
まさにそこは松の木で覆われた山なんです。
ハイキングをして山の上から美しい景色を眺めることもできるんですよ。

However, if you go from the path, you can discover the mountain’s secret.
From 1896 to the 1960s the mountain was used as a quarry, mostly for black granite.
The workers worried this might disturb the trolls they believed lived in the mountain.
また、小道から外れると、山の秘密を発見することができます。
1896年から1960年代まで、この山は主に黒花崗岩の採石場として使われていました。
労働者たちは、山に住むと信じられていたトロール（北欧の伝説に登場する妖精）の邪魔になることを心配していました。

So, to appease the trolls they built a giant sofa out of stone.
They hoped this offering would make the trolls happy.
It definitely made me happy when I stumbled upon it as a child, and it also made my mom quite confused when I kept saying I wanted to play on the sofa on the mountain.

そこでトロールをなだめるために、彼らは石で巨大なソファを作りました。
彼らはこの贈り物でトロールたちが喜んでくれることを願っていました。

Spending those bright summer nights deep in the forest, far away from the rest of the world, in a place so old it doesn’t have electricity, gives me a very special feeling that is perhaps the complete opposite of how it feels to live in Tokyo.
現実世界から遠く離れた古い森の奥で、電気もないままに明るい夏の夜を過ごすと、本当に特別な気持ちになります。東京での生活とはまったく違う感覚ですね。
