Natto is a traditional Japanese food that is well-known for being good for health and longevity.
It is made with fermented soybeans, and has a lot of fiber and healthy bacteria that can support gastrointestinal health.
納豆は、健康と長寿に良いことで知られている日本の伝統的な食品です。
発酵した大豆で作られており、食物繊維や腸内環境をサポートする善玉菌が豊富に含まれています。
There are many Japanese people who enjoy and eat natto regularly, and it is a popular breakfast food.
However, as a foreigner living in Japan, natto is the only Japanese food that I have tried so far that I just can’t bring myself to like. Something about the sticky and strange texture is quite unappetizing to me, and I can’t eat more than a bit or two before giving up.
納豆を食べ親しんでいる日本人は多く、朝食としても人気です。
でも、日本に住む外国人の私にとって、納豆はこれまで試した日本食の中で唯一、どうしても好きになれない食べ物なんです。
ネバネバした不思議な食感がどうも好きになれず、一口か二口食べただけでもうダメです。
That being said, since natto is not only healthy, but integral to Japanese culture, I really want to try to enjoy eating it.
While there are many methods of eating natto, the most common way it is served is over rice with karashi mustard or soy sauce.
But perhaps with a little creativity, there are ways that natto can be enjoyed even by people who don’t care for it, such as myself.
とはいえ、納豆は健康に良いだけでなく、日本文化の一部でもあるので、なんとかして美味しく食べたいと思っています。
納豆の食べ方はいろいろありますが、一番ポピュラーなのは、ご飯にのせて、からしや醤油をかけて食べる方法です。
ですが、少し工夫したら私のように納豆が苦手な人でも食べられる方法があるのではないでしょうか。
With this in mind, I have been researching a variety of dishes made with natto, in the hopes of finding a way to eat it happily.
Although many Japanese people also like natto, perhaps this could also be helpful to the few that- like me- do not.
そんな思いから、納豆を美味しく食べる方法を見つけようと、さまざまな料理を調べています。
多くの日本の皆さんは納豆をお好きだと思いますが、私のように納豆が苦手な人の参考になればと思います。

Natto dishes with a twist:納豆のアレンジ料理
Natto Rice Bowl(納豆ごはん)
Natto is commonly eaten over rice, but that doesn’t mean that the recipe must end there!
Mixing natto with a variety of other vegetables, pickled vegetables, and toppings could help mask the pungent taste of the natto.
A popular way of doing this that I have seen, is by adding cucumbers, pickled daikon, and kimchi.
Top it off with soy sauce and green onions, (and maybe even a fried egg on top!), and you can make a dish that even a natto-hater like me could love!
納豆はご飯の上にのせて食べるのが一般的ですが、その他の食べ方もあるんです!
納豆に野菜や漬物、その他の具材と混ぜることで、納豆特有の強い味を和らげることができます。
私が見た中では、きゅうりやたくあん、キムチなどを加えるのが、人気の食べ方なようです。
その上に醤油とネギ(トッピングに目玉焼きをのせてもいいかも!)をかけたら、私のような納豆嫌いでも気に入る一品ができるわ!
Natto Mapo Tofu(納豆マーボー豆腐)
Mapo Tofu is a popular Chinese dish that many people love. (Including me!)
Now add a little natto into the mix, and the spicy tofu dish can become even better and healthier!
The garlicky sauce really compliments the unique texture of the natto, while also masking the distinct smell.
After all, what could be better than tofu and natto together in one dish?
マーボー豆腐は人気の高い中華料理です。(私も含めて!)。
そこに納豆を少し混ぜると、スパイシーな麻婆豆腐がさらに美味しく、ヘルシーになります!
にんにく風味のソースは納豆の独特な食感を引き立て、特有の匂いも和らげます。

Natto Spaghetti(納豆スパゲッティ)
Like many Japanese people, I really love pasta and other Italian-inspired dishes.
So what better way to enjoy natto, than in a delicious spaghetti recipe?
The ones I have seen have mostly been oil pasta, which makes total sense considering the slimy texture and strong taste of natto.
Garlic and natto also seem to go well together!
多くの日本の皆さんと同じで、私もパスタや他のイタリア料理が大好きです。
ですから納豆を楽しむなら、美味しいスパゲッティのレシピがぴったり合いますよね?
私が見てきたレシピのほとんどはオイルパスタでしたが、それは納豆の粘り気と味の強さからすると納得できます。

Natto rolls are commonly served at many sushi restaurants already, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get creative!
The natto can be paired with other ingredients of your choosing.
Some examples that I have seen include raw tuna and green onion, corn salad, and other pickled vegetables. Delicious!
納豆巻きは多くのお寿司屋さんで食べられるけど、アレンジして作ることもできるわ!
納豆をお好きな具材と組み合わせてくださいね。

Natto Curry(納豆カレー)
Japanese-style curry is another well-known dish that many people love, so why not add a little natto?
The flavor of Japanese curry is so uniquely delicious, and it masks the taste of natto while also giving the curry a little extra crunch to enjoy.
This dish both looks and smells to die for!
日本のカレーも多くの人に愛されている人気料理なので、納豆を加えてもいいはず!
和風カレーの独特のおいしさが納豆の味を隠しながら、ちょっとした歯ごたえも与えてくれます。見た目も香りもたまりません!
Hopefully, this will be my gateway into eating natto at least semi-regularly.
Although I am not sure if all of these recipes will be to everyone’s taste, I hope to help people to try new things, little by little.
