To be honest, I have never really liked summer.
My preference has always been cold weather, so I always look forward to winter.
This year especially, with the incredibly hot weather, I feel even less motivated to see what summer has to offer.
That being said, because there are so many things to do in Japan, I have been convinced to persevere through the heat!
Today, I’d like to share some of the activities I’ve enjoyed in Japan this summer.
実はね、私は夏があんまり好きじゃないんです。
ずっと寒いほうが好きで、毎年冬になるのを楽しみにしているんですよね。
今年は特にものすごく暑かったので、夏のイベントをチェックするモチベーションもなくなっていました。
でもね、日本にはお楽しみがたくさんあるので、暑さに負けずにやっていこうと決めました！
今日は、この夏私が日本で楽しんだアクティビティをいくつかご紹介したいと思います。

Last year, I discovered the joys of stamp rallies!
I enjoyed completing one last summer, so when more were announced this year, I excitedly counted the days until it started.
昨年、スタンプラリーの楽しさに目覚めました！
昨年の夏にひとつコンプリートできたのが楽しかったので、今年も開催されると知って、開始日を心待ちにしていました。

This year, the big stamp rally is the JR Pokemon one.
To my surprise, I found myself traveling not only all over Tokyo, but also to Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, and Ibaraki.
The stamp rally covered a great distance, indeed, and I enjoyed exploring the area around the stations, too.
I realize it might be a little childish to be so excited about a trivial stamp rally, but there isn’t anything that compares to this in the US, so it’s been great to try new things!
今年の大きなスタンプラリーはJRのポケモンラリーです。
自分でも驚きましたが、東京だけでなく神奈川、千葉、埼玉、そして茨城にも足をのばしちゃいました。
このスタンプラリーはとても開催エリアが広く、それぞれの駅の近くを見て回ることも楽しめました。
スタンプラリーにこんなに興奮するのはちょっと子どもっぽいかもしれませんが、アメリカにはこういうものがないので、私にとっては目新しい経験なんです。

Japan is, of course, famous for festivals, but none are quite like summer festivals.
On weekends and evenings, city centers and train station exits light up with lanterns and all sorts of decorations.
日本はもちろんお祭りで有名ですが、夏祭りはまた格別です。
週末や夕方になると、街の中心部や駅の出口が提灯やさまざまな飾りでライトアップされます。

So far, my favorites have been the Jiyugaoka Bon-Odori and Asagaya Tanabata Festival, both pictured below.
The Jiyugaoka Bon-Odori was especially fun as the organizers incorporated J-Pop songs from Yoasobi and other popular artists alongside long-standing traditional music.
We got to chat with locals and see how they celebrated their community.
Learning the dances alongside friends made us forget about the hot weather and enjoy each other’s company.
今までのなかでは、自由が丘の盆踊りと阿佐ヶ谷の七夕祭りがすごく良かったです。
自由が丘の盆踊りでは、主催者がYoasobiなどの人気アーティストのJ-Popソングを取り入れ、昔ながらの民謡と組み合わせていたのが本当に楽しかったわ。
地元の人たちと会話を交わし、彼らがどのように地域をお祝いしているのかを知ることができました。
友人と一緒に踊りを覚えているうちに、暑さを忘れてお互いに楽しみました。

On the other hand, the Asagaya Tanabata Festival was more relaxed.
Although there was no dancing, we still had a grand time exploring the area and the paper mache displays (and can’t forget the food!) Store owners had created famous characters in paper mache and hung them from the ceiling of the covered store alley.
Streamers and other decorations for Tanabata also hung next to the characters.
It was cool to see the creativity of the community on full display.
一方、阿佐ヶ谷の七夕祭りはもっとのんびりしていました。
踊りはなかったものの、そのエリアをぶらぶらしながら、張り子のディスプレイ（そして忘れてはならない食べ物！）を楽しみました。
商店街の店主たちは有名なキャラクターを張り子で作り、アーケードの天井から吊るしていました。
七夕祭りのための吹き流しなどもキャラクターの近くに吊るされていました。
地域が一丸となってお祭りを作り上げている様子を見られて、とても素晴らしかったです。

All this said, this year is a very different summer than I’m used to.
Back home in California, it’s not quite as hot, but my family and I would still prefer to stay indoors.
We’d relax and enjoy indoor crafts and activities instead.
In a way, I’m glad to explore a different kind of summer, even if it is really hot!
そんな訳で、今年の夏はこれまでの経験とはまったく違います。
地元のカリフォルニアではそれほど暑くはないものの、私たち家族は屋内で過ごす方が好きです。
家でリラックスしながら、クラフトや家でするアクティビティを楽しんできました。
だから、日本の猛暑が厳しくても、今までとは違う夏の過ごし方を体験できて嬉しいです。

There’s still time left in the summer, so I hope to explore more fun activities and ways to escape the heat before it’s over.
Maybe next time, I’ll try out a hike outside the city, as I’ve heard higher elevations tend to be cooler!
夏の季節はまだ少し残っているので、今のうちにもっと楽しいアクティビティや暑さをしのぐ方法を探してみたいと思っています。
次回は、標高が高い場所が涼しいと聞いたので、都会を離れてハイキングに挑戦してみたいわ！
