They said that “happiness” and “freedom” go together. I couldn’t agree more.
Who doesn’t want to have both all the time.
So I thought, what better way to do that than to (literally) “just let go and fly” (while I still can).
And what better time to do it than on my birthday. So I did.
「幸せ」と「自由」は同時にあると言われます。私も本当にそう思います。
いつだってそのふたつを要らない人なんていないですよね。
だから自分が出来るうちに「ガチで飛ぶ」しかない！と思ったんです。
私の誕生日を最高に過ごすのはこれだ、とね。そして挑戦したの。

It had always been in my bucket list to skydive, specifically in Switzerland.
I once saw Taemin, a member of the k-pop group SHInee, in a TV show paragliding over the magnificent Swiss Alps in winter.
Ever since then, I’ve always wanted to do skydiving there too, with my love for snow and all.
ずっと自分のバケットリスト（死ぬまでにやりたい事リスト）にスイスでスカイダイビングをする事を入れていました。
以前にK-POPアイドルSHINeeのメンバーのテミンが、テレビ番組で雄大な冬のアルプス山脈をパラグライディングしているのを観た事があって、
それからずーっと大好きな雪や自然の中、アルプスでスカイダイビングをやってみたいと思っていました。

So when I was thinking of what to do on my birthday last year, I suddenly remembered that.
But doing it in Switzerland was too expensive for me so I tried searching if they also have it here in Japan.
Fortunately, they do. I found Tokyo Skydiving Club ( https://tokyoskydivingclub.jp/) in the internet and inquired about it.
Tokyo Skydiving Club is located in Okegawa, Saitama, which is far from Tokyo. It takes about two hours to get there.
It’s kinda like Disneyland, the name is Tokyo Disneyland but it’s actually in Chiba. 😉
昨年、自分の誕生日に何をしようかと考えていた時に、突然その事を思い出しました。
ですが、スイスに行ってチャレンジするのはすごくお金が掛かるから、日本でスカイダイビングが出来ないかを調べました。
あったんです！「東京スカイダイビングクラブ」をネットで見つけ、問い合わせしました。
クラブは埼玉県桶川市にあって、東京からは遠く、2時間ぐらい掛かります。
千葉にあるのに東京の名前が入っていて、まるでディスにーランドみたいですね(笑)。

They didn’t have an open schedule during my actual birthday, so I booked January 22nd which is 2 days before my birthday.
TSC is offering 3 kinds of plans.
One is the standard where you just fly, no pictures or videos, which costs 33,000 yen.
Another one is with a handheld camera by the instructor, only videos, which costs 41,000 yen.
And also, the most expensive of all, which is the one that I got, costs 50,000 yen.
This plan includes a cameraman who will take your pictures and videos for you and will jump together with you and your instructor.
I know it’s quite expensive but I think it’s definitely worth it since I don’t know when I’ll be able to do it again.
So I wanted to make sure I capture it in pictures and videos too and that the quality would be good.
クラブは私の誕生日には営業しておらず、2日前の1月22日に予約をしました！
TSC（東京スカイダイビングクラブ略称）は3つのプランを提案してきました。
ひとつめはスタンダードなプランで、写真や動画撮影はなく飛ぶだけのプランで33,000円。
ふたつめはインストラクターがハンディカメラで動画撮影してくれるプランで41,000円。
そして私が選んだのは一番高いプランで50,000円でした。
カメラマンが付いて写真も動画も撮影してくれ、インストラクターと一緒に飛ぶプランです。
すごく高いなって思ったけれど、次にいつ出来るか分からないから、絶対価値があると思います。
飛んでる瞬間を写真や動画で確認したかったし、素敵に撮れたらいいなと思いました。

When I got to Okegawa station, I had to take a bus that would bring me to the pick-up point.
Then somebody would pick us up and bring us to the skydiving place.
The place where they do the skydiving is called Honda Airport.
It’s quite a small one and maybe only suitable for small airplanes, like charter planes.
桶川駅に到着し、バスに乗って集合場所まで行きました。
そして、スカイダイビングの場所まで送迎してくれました。
スカイダイビングする場所はホンダエアポートと言います。
その空港はとても小さく、チャーター機のような小型航空機専用のようでした。

When we arrived at the airport, there were several small office-like rooms for registration and training.
After registering, I waited for a short while and did a very short training. I had to put on a suit before the training.
The training was very short and since my instructor couldn’t speak English at all, I had to remember all the Japanese words I have in me so I could understand as much as I can.
When he asked me if I have any questions, I told him that I don’t have any but I have one very important thing to say.
I told him that
“I can’t die today because it’s my birthday. So we better land in one piece.”
空港に着くと、登録や練習の為の小さなオフィスのような部屋がいくつかありました。
登録した後、少し待ってから短い練習をしました。練習の前には、（スカイダイビング用の）スーツに着替えをしました。
練習時間はあっという間だったし、私のインストラクターは英語を全く話せなくって、私が理解出来た日本語で全て覚えなければいけなかったの。
彼が質問はありますかと聞いたので、特にないけれど、ひとつとても重要な事を言いました。
「自分の誕生日に死ぬ事は出来ないわ。無事に戻って来なくっちゃ！」

Then he cheered for me and wished me a very happy birthday.
He also assured me that he has been skydiving for 25 years and he has never had an accident.
I let out a big sigh of relief and decided to trust him.
すると彼は励ましてくれ、素晴らしい誕生日になるよう願ってくていました。
それに彼はスカイダイビング歴25年間になるけれど、今まで一回もアクシデントに出くわしたことがないと安心させてくれました。
安心して彼を信じると決心しました。
私はホット一息ついて、彼の事を信じる事に決めました。

After the training, we boarded a van that took us to where the plane was and I boarded last.
At that time, I didn’t know that that means that I’m jumping first!
In the plane, I didn’t feel any fear.
So I was wondering if something was wrong with me.
While having these thoughts, we arrived at the required height for jumping (12,500 feet / 3,810 meters）and the door was opened.
練習をした後、みんなで飛行機の場所まで車で連れて行ってもらったのですが、私が一番最後に乗り込んだのです。
その時には、最後に車に乗った人が最初にジャンプする事になるなんて知らなかったんです！
飛行機の中で、私は落ち着いていました。
もし何か悪い事が起こったどうしよう。
そんな事を考えているうちにジャンプに必要な高さまで着き（12,500=3,81km）、扉が開きました。

Since I would be the first one to jump, the door was right in front of me, and when it opened, that’s when I felt it. The fear.
While looking at the three girls who jumped first (by themselves) and thinking “, it’s been swell. Lord, here I come.”,
my instructor got me ready and after 3 taps on my shoulder, he asked “Ready?” and of course, I said “No!”.
Then he said “Okay! Let’s go!” and off we went.
私が最初にジャンプするので、扉は私の真正面にあり、扉が開いた時、恐怖を感じました。
女の子3人組が自分達の中で誰が最初にジャンプするかを話しているのを見ながら、「もうしょうがないのよのね、主よ最高です。いざ出発」なんて考えていました。
インストラクターは私に準備させ、3回私の肩を叩きました。そして彼は私に「準備はいい？」と聞きました。私はもちろん「No！！」と言いました。
そして彼が「Okay! Let’s go!」と言って、私達は飛び出しました。

If I were to describe how it felt, I would say, it’s like riding a roller coaster ride without the roller coaster but much faster and windier.
I was so scared of opening my mouth and not being able to close it again that I looked horrible in my photos.
It only lasted for a couple of minutes, less than 10 minutes, but it felt like hours.
どんな感じだったかと言うと、乗り物がない、しかももっと高速で強風の中、ジェットコースターに乗っているようだったわ。
写真を見ると口が開いたまま閉じれなくなる恐怖で変な顔をしています。
この時間は10分もない数分の事でしたが、私には1時間ぐらいに感じました。

When we landed, I couldn’t believe what I had just experienced.
It was something that couldn’t really be described with words but something that you actually have to experience yourself.
So I really encourage you, if it’s something that you’ve always wanted to do, JUST DO IT!
着地した時には、今起こった事は夢じゃないかと思いました。
言葉にするのは難しくて、やってみないと分からないかも知れません。
やりたい事はヤッチャイナヨ！ぜひ実際にやってみてください。

It might be scary. It might be expensive. It might be dangerous.
But I always say, everywhere it’s scary, money can be earned again, it’s dangerous everywhere.
Life is short. Anything can happen to you, anytime.
But the memory, and the feeling that goes with it, will last a lifetime.
恐怖があったり、値段が張ったり、危険だったりするかも知れない。
でも、恐怖はどこにでもあるし、お金はまた作ればいいし、危険だってどこにでもあると思います。
短い人生、何が起こるか分かりません。
でも経験した事の記憶や感じた心はずっと自分に残るはずです。
