Hi. I’m Dave, one of the new teachers at b. I’d like to tell you a little about where I’m from.
こんにちは！最近b の仲間入りしたDave（David）です。出身地について少しお話したいと思います。

My hometown is a small city called Chester. About 80,000 people live there.
It’s in northwest England, near Liverpool and Manchester.
Chester has a long and interesting history; it began as a Roman fort called Deva (ディワ) in 79 AD and eventually became a city in 1541.
僕の故郷はチェスターという小さな街です。人口は約80,000人です。
リバプールやマンチェスターの近くのイングランドの北西部に位置します。
チェスターの歴史は長く興味深いものです。西暦79年にディワ（Deva）というローマ軍の要塞として始まり、やがて1541年には都市になりました。

Chester is famous for its many unique and historic buildings – you can see architecture from every period of British history.
The ancient Romans built city walls, public baths and an amphitheater (like a sports arena), and these can all be seen today.
Chester cathedral and castle were built in the 11th century – the cathedral is one of the oldest in England.
In the city center are some buildings called “The Rows”; they are now shops, but the ground floors used to be storerooms and the upper floors were shops and houses.
This style of building only exists in Chester, so we are very proud of them.
チェスターは貴重で歴史的な建物が多いことで有名で、英国史におけるどの時代の建築物も目にすることが出来ます。
古代ローマ人が建設した城壁や公衆浴場、円形競技場（スポーツ競技場のようなもの）などすべてを今日でも見ることが出来るんです。
イングランドで最も古い大聖堂のひとつであるチェスターの大聖堂や城は11世紀に建てられました。
街の中心部には「The Rows（ザ・ロウズ）」と呼ばれる建物があり、現在は店舗になっているが、かつては1階が倉庫、2階が店舗や住宅でした。
このようなスタイルの建物はチェスターにしかないので、市民はとても誇りに思っています。

There’s also a popular horseracing track called The Roodee, but this was a harbour in Roman times.
Finally, there’s Eastgate Clock.
It was built to celebrate Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee in 1897, and is the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben.
「The Roodee（ザ・ルーディー）」という人気の競馬場もあって、ローマ時代には港だったそうですよ。
最後にご紹介するのは「Eastgate Clock（イーストゲート・クロック）」です。
1897年のヴィクトリア女王のダイヤモンド・ジュビリー（即位60周年記念式典）を祝って建てられたもので、ビッグ・ベンの次にイギリスで最も写真に撮られている時計なんです。

Chester is surrounded by farmland and grows lots of wheat. We also produce Cheshire cheese, salt, and silk.
There are many pretty villages and interesting museums nearby, as well.
チェスターは周囲を農地に囲まれており、小麦を多く栽培しています。また、チェシャーチーズや塩、シルクなどの生産もしています。
近くには美しい村や興味深い博物館もたくさんあります。

Some famous people were born in Chester, including ex-Liverpool footballer Michael Owen and James Bond actor Daniel Craig.
Pop singer Gary Barlow and Alice in Wonderland author Lewis Carroll were born nearby, too.
Chester also has national football, rugby, and basketball teams, but honestly, we’re not very good.
If you ever go to the UK, Chester is an excellent place to visit!
元リヴァプールのサッカー選手マイケル・オーウェンやジェームズ・ボンド役のダニエル・クレイグなどチェスターで生まれの有名人もいます。
ポップシンガーのゲイリー・バーロウや不思議の国のアリスの作者ルイス・キャロルもこの近くで生まれたんですよ。
チェスターにはサッカーやラグビー、バスケットボールのナショナルチームもありますが、残念ながらあまり強くありません。
イギリスに行くことがあれば、チェスターは観光にもってこいの場所ですよ！
