It’s no secret at “b”, that I am a big fan of Japanese comedy .
Ever since I was a child, I loved comedy films and TV sitcoms.
I grew up watching parody films by the great comedic director, Mel
Brooks and I always watched Saturday Night Live.
私は”ｂ”ではお笑い好きで有名です（笑）
子供のころから、コメディー系の映画やドラマが大好きで、コメディー天才の
メル・ブルックス監督のパロディー映画を何回も見たり、アメリカの有名な
コメディーバラエティー番組「サタデー・ナイト・ライブ」もよく見ました！
There are four people in my family, but our interests are quite different.
My father loves educational and historical programming.
My mother thrives on interior decorating and cooking shows.
My younger sister, Susan, worshipped MTV and fashion programming.
Personally, I couldn’t live without soap operas and
entertainment magazine programs. However, there were two types of TV
programs we could enjoy as a family:quiz programs and comedy shows.
私のファミリーは４人家族ですが、趣味や興味は全くもって違います。
お父さんは学習的や歴史的番組が大好きで、お母さんはインティリアデザインや
クッキング番組に夢中でした。妹のスージーはMTV（ミュージックテレビ）やファッションが
一番だったし、私はメロドラマやエンタ系の情報番組にすっごいハマっていました！
でも、４人とも楽しめる番組も二つだけありました。それはクイズ番組やコメディーです!!
With quiz shows, we’d compete against one another to see who could
answer the most questions correctly. Before “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire”,
there were great programs like “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune”.
Sometimes we’d compete in “parents verses children” in our living room
which was always fun. Afterwards, there would either be a comedy sitcom
like Full House or Friends which we’d watch as a family.
It was a special time we could share as a family, learning and laughing together.
クイズ番組の時は「ピーターソン家の中で、一番賢いは誰だ！？」とチャレンジ
がいつも始まりました。
もしかしたら、ピーターソン一家は勝負好きかも知れません（笑）。「クイズ$
ミリオネア」のずいぶん前には「ジョパディ！」と「ホイール・オブ・フォーチュン」が
大人気のクイズ番組で、時々私たちのリビングでは「親子の勝負」が行われました！
本当に楽しかった!!クイズ番組の後には、人気のコメディードラマが放送してい
ました。例えば、「フル・ハウス」か「フレンズ」。
家族と一緒に観るのはとっても楽しかったです。家族と 一緒に笑ったり、勉強
しながら 過ごす大切な時間でもありました。
After coming to Japan, I did feel homesick from time to time.
Though I hadn’t lived with my family since I was 17,being half-way around the world
was really tough. When I was feeling blue one day, I turned on the TV and
discovered a comedy program called “The Gods of Entertainment.
” At the time, I didn’t understand much Japanese,
but I did understand laughter. I quickly became interested in Japanese
TV because on many programs,there was always someone laughing at something.
Whether it was a variety talk show or a popular quiz show, I could always find laughter.
来日後は、時々ホームシックになってしまいました。17歳で、大学に行った時か
ら、私は一人暮らしをしていましたが、世界の反対側で暮らすのは、とんでもなく大変でした。
ある日、本当にブルーな気持ちになってしまっていた時、なんとなくテレビを付けました。
そしてその時に、「エンタの神様」と言う番組を発見しました。その時には、
あまり日本語がわからなかったけど、笑い声でコメディー番組だと
すぐにわかりました。そして、私は急激に日本の番組が好きになりました。
だって、日本の番組ではいつも何かしら、お笑いや人気のクイズ番組がやってい
るから。（＾ー＾）v
Japanese comedy became a source of relief, enjoyment, and learning for
me. I started taking notes when I watched TV,and pushed myself to try
and understand what everyone was laughingabout.
I developed a list of programs I had to watch every week.
For example, “Quiz Parade! Hexagon II”, “The Iromanea”, “Red Carpet”,
“Nepleague”, and “The Gods of Entertainment”.
These programs always make me laugh, and the quiz ones also give my
brain a little workout, too!
それから私にとって、日本のお笑いはリラックス、楽しみ、そして学ぶことにも
なりました。テレビを見ながら、メモをたくさん書き、何が面白いかを知りたくて、
理解出来るまで、一生懸命勉強をしました。また毎週見る番組のリストも作ってました。
例えば、「クイズパレード！ヘキサゴンII」、「ザ・イロマネア」、「爆笑レッドカーペット」、
「ネプリーグ」、と「エンタの神様」。 見ると、笑いが止まりません。（o＾ー｀）b　
クイズ番組では笑いだけではなく、悩力トレーニングも出来ました。
After several years of watching comedians on TV, I’ve not only discovered my favorite comedians,but I’ve rented DVDs, attended live shows, and even met several of
my favorite comedians!Through their hard work, I’ve learned to laugh in a completely
different language.The format and characteristics of Japanese comedy are sometimes
different to the stand-up and sketch comedy popular in America.
I respect their creativity and determination to make others happy.
I often surprise fans and comedians alike, as few non-Japanese understand
or appreciate,Japanese comedy. Though I look different on the outside,
I believe that laughter is a universal language.
そして、数年後には、沢山のお気に入り芸人さんが出来ました！DVDを借りた
り、ライブに行ったりして、時には好きなお笑い芸人さんと話す事も出来ました！
彼らのおかげで、私は全く違う言語で笑う事が出来たのです。
ちなみに日本とアメリカの漫才とコントはなんだかちょっと違うんですよ～。
私は芸人さん達の人を笑わせる想像力を尊敬しています!!
日本のお笑いが好きな外国人は少ないのか、他のファンの方やお笑い芸人さんも
私が話すと、みんなビックリしています。
確かに見た目は外国人ですが、でも笑いは世界共通の言語だと思ってます!!
