In the past few years, I haven’t had many opportunities to read
because I was either too busy or too tired. If I wasn’t with my kids
I was probably trying to catch up on sleep.
Since I started working at B and commuting by myself again,
I am able to read during my train rides.
Now, I must always have a book in my bag so I can read at any given opportunity.
ここ数年、読書をする機会を持てないでいたの。とっても忙しくて、疲れてしまっていたから。
子供達が一緒に居ない時間が少しでもあれば、私は間違いなく眠ろうとしていたの。
bで働き始めて通勤することが再開してから、私はやっと電車の中で読むことが
出来るようになったのよ。今私はいつも必ずかばんの中に本を入れていて、
読書の時間を持てるようになったわ。


My father-in-law knows that I always welcome reading any form of literature
in English. So whenever he comes to visit us in Tokyo, he gives me books
and magazines from his large collection.
わたしの義父は、私がいつもジャンルにこだわらずに英語の文学を読みたいと
考えていることを知っています。だから義父が東京に来る時にはいつでも、
彼の膨大な蔵書の中から本や雑誌を持ってきてくださるのよ。


One of the books I came upon was Deep River by Shusaku Endo.
そうやって私が出会った本の1冊に、遠藤周作の『深い河（英題：Deep
River）』があります。




I didn’t know anything about the author’s background before reading the book,
but I soon realized that he must have been brought up as a Christian.
The novel follows five Japanese people whose lives intertwine
when they set out to go on a tour to the Ganges River in India.
私はこの作家の経歴をこの本を読むまで知らなかったけれど、彼がキリスト教徒として
生きてきたことが良く分かった気がします。この小説は、5人の日本人がインドの
ガンジス川へのツアーに参加したことで生まれた人間関係を題材にしています。


We learn about each of the character’s lives, what brings
them to the Ganges River and what they experience during their trip.
The book gives a very interesting glimpse into each character’s world with
their varied histories, beliefs and personal pursuits. It also touches on
different aspects of various religions and gives a vivid description of the
areas surrounding the famed Ganges. It’s an interesting book that will
probably compel me to pick up some of his other novels.
私達は、それぞれの主人公の生について、どんな経験をガンジス川に
持ち込んできたのか、そしてその旅の途中でどんな経験をしたのかを学んでいきます。
この本は、それぞれの登場人物の複雑な非常に興味深い人生の歴史や
信条や仕事の世界を垣間見ることが出来ます。
そしてそれはまた、多様な宗教の異なった解釈に触れ、有名なガンジス一帯の描写を
鮮やかに描写しています。この先かなりの確実で私は、遠藤周作の他の著書も読むことに
なるだろうと思うほど興味深い本でした。
