In my experience, you don’t realize how much the environment you grew up in is a part of you until you leave it.
I think it’s true for a lot of things, especially things like culture, language, tradition etc.
But I also believe it applies to the physical environment—like the nature and the buildings around us.
育った環境が自分に与える影響を、地元を離れてみて初めて気が付くものですね。
特に、文化や言語、伝統などに関しては本当にそうだと思います。
でも、これは私たちの周りにある自然や建物など、日々目にしていた環境についても同じことが言える気がします。

I grew up in Denmark, which doesn’t have the most varied or exciting nature, but we do have a lot of ocean.
My sanctuary has always been the beach.
I’ve always loved sitting in the sand, looking at the endless horizon and listening to the rhythm of the waves.
When I was younger, I spent a lot of school breaks with my family in a vacation house near the west coast.
私の育ったデンマークは、「自然が豊かで何でも楽しめる」という環境ではないけれど、海に囲まれた国です。
ビーチはずっと私の癒しの場所でした。
砂の上に座って、果てしない地平線を見つめ、波の音を聞くのが大好きでした。
以前は、学校の休みのたびに家族と一緒に西海岸近くの別荘で過ごしていました。

The Danish west coast is known for the grassy sand dunes and fierce waves.
The coastline there is long and straight, so walking along it, I always thought it felt like the beach goes on forever.
I have a lot of memories of going to those beaches and walking up and down the sand dunes until I got tired.
It remains one of my favorite places in the world.
デンマークの西海岸は、草に覆われた砂丘と波の激しさで知られています。
長く真っ直ぐな海岸線で、歩いているとビーチが永遠に続いているように感じました。
そのビーチの砂丘を登ったり、滑ったりして、へとへとになるまでよく遊んでいました。
今でも世界で一番好きな場所の一つです。

My hometown is Aarhus, which is also by the ocean.
It’s the second largest city in Denmark, but for Japanese standards it’s very small.
You can pretty much see everything there is to see in a day or two.
It’s cozy and homey and very down-to-earth.
In a lot of ways, it’s the polar opposite of Tokyo, where I’m living now.
生まれ育ったオーフス（Aarhus）も海沿いにあります。
デンマークでは2番目に大きな都市ですが、日本の都市の規模感からするととても小さい場所です。
1日か2日もあれば、全部見て回れるでしょう。
とても居心地がよく、家庭的で、素朴な雰囲気です。
たくさんの点で、今住んでいる東京とは正反対の場所です。

My favorite parts of the city are near the water.
There’s a popular spot called ‘Tangkrogen’ (tang means seaweed).
There’s a small beach, which as the name suggest has a lot seaweed, but it’s a nice place to swim in summer.
It’s also right by the marina, which has a lot of cute sail boats and also the best ice cream in town.
私が好きな場所は、街の水辺に近いところです。
「タンクロゲン（Tangkrogen）」と呼ばれる人気のスポットがあります（「タン」は海藻を意味します）。
その名の通り、小さなビーチにはたくさんの海藻がありますが、夏には泳ぐのにぴったりの場所です。
また、マリーナのすぐそばには、かわいい帆船がたくさん並んでいて、町で一番おいしいアイスクリームが楽しめるお店もあります。

What’s unique about the coast in Aarhus is how the forest and the beach meet.
There’s one beach that I’d often go to with my family and the drive to get there takes you through such a nice forest area.
It’s especially beautiful in spring when everything is bright green.
オーフスの海岸のユニークな点は、森とビーチが隣接しているところです。
家族と一緒に行くビーチは、素敵な森の道を通ってたどり着くんですよ。
春になると、すべてが鮮やかな緑に包まれて、一段と美しくなります。

I came to Japan in the summer of 2024.
It’s the third time I’ve moved to a different country, but adjusting is still a long process every time, and especially coming to Japan where everything is so different.
Of course, that’s also what makes it interesting.
2024年の夏に来日しました。
海外へ移住するのはこれで3回目ですが、毎回慣れるまでに時間がかかります。特に、日本は異なる点がたくさんありますからね。
もちろん、それがまた面白いところでもあるんですけどね。

I’ve also lived in Paris and Berlin, which are both amazing cities with a lot to explore, but they’re both landlocked and after living there a while I would start to miss going to the beach a lot.
The thought of not being able to get to the ocean somehow makes me feel a bit claustrophobic.
Maybe Japanese people can relate.
パリとベルリンにも住んでいたことがありますが、どちらも知れば知るほど素敵な場所でした。ただ、どちらも内陸にあるので、住んでしばらくするとビーチに行きたいと思うようになります。
「海には行けないんだ」と考えると、何だか窮屈な気持ちになります。
日本の皆さんには共感してもらえるかもしれませんね。

Now that I’m in Japan, it’s nice to be surrounded by ocean.
Japan is, of course, much bigger than Denmark, and I still miss being able to walk to the beach in just 30 minutes.
However, I’m excited to explore the beaches of Japan.
So far, my favorite has been this beach in Kugenuma, near Enoshima.
今、日本にいるので、海に囲まれているのが嬉しいです。
もちろん日本はデンマークよりもずっと大きいので、徒歩30分でビーチに行けた頃が懐かしいですけれども。
でも、日本のビーチを巡るのが楽しみです。
今まで行った中では、江の島の近くの鵠沼海岸が大好き！

I went there with a friend last month.
We were standing on the beach with our feet in the water as the sun set behind Mt. Fuji. It was pretty magical.
先月、友人と一緒に鵠沼海岸に行ったんです。
夕日に沈む富士山を背にしながら、ビーチで足を海水に浸しました。とても幻想的な光景だったわ！
