I love eating and there are so many delicious foods in Japan!
When we talk about food, we often use words like “sweet”, “sour”, or “bitter”, but they only talk about the taste.
So how do we describe the food’s texture (食感)?
食べることが大好きだし、日本は美味しい食べ物で溢れているわ！
食べ物の話をする時に「甘い・酸っぱい・苦い」のような言葉をよく使うけれど、それは味覚についてよね。
では、食感についてはどう説明するかしら？

◆crunchy＝カリカリ
We often say snacks such as nuts and granola, or some Japanese rice crackers (せんべい) are crunchy.
We can also say fresh fruits or vegetables, such as apple, cucumber or carrot, are crunchy.
ナッツやグラノーラ、お煎餅のようなスナックの食感のことをよく”crunchy”と言うわ。
リンゴやキュウリやニンジンなどの新鮮なフルーツや野菜の場合も”crunchy”を使います。

◆crispy＝パリパリ / サクサク
I love potato chips and popcorn because they are crispy.
Most of the deep fried food (揚げ物), for example french fries (フライドポテト), is crispy.
So of course, Japanese foods such as tempura and seaweed (のり) are crispy too.
ポテトチップスやポップコーンのようにパリパリとしているものが大好き。
フライドポテトのような揚げ物のほとんどが”crispy”ね。
天ぷらや海苔のような日本食の場合も”crispy”を使うわ。

◆fluffy＝ふわふわ
Some popular desserts, such as soufflé or Japanese pancakes, are fluffy.
So how about a cream puff (シュークリーム)?
We can say that it is crispy on the outside, and fluffy on the inside. 　
スフレや日本のパンケーキのような人気のデザートは”fluffy”と表現します。

シュークリームはどうかしら？
『it is crispy on the outside, and fluffy on the inside.（外はパリパリで中身はふわふわ）』ね。

◆chewy＝モチモチ
Of course Japanese rice cake (もち) is chewy.
Other foods such as dried mango or beef jerky are chewy too.
One of my favorite candies in Japan is Hi-Chew and of course it is very chewy as well.
お餅はもちろん”chewy”ね。
ドライマンゴーやビーフジャーキーなんかも”chewy”と言うのよ。
日本のお菓子の中で私がとっても好きなお菓子ハイチューも”very chewy”です。

◆sticky / slimy / gooey＝ネバネバ
Japanese fermented soybeans (納豆) has a very unique texture.
We can say that it is sticky, slimy and gooey.
Japanese yam (山芋) is slimy or gooey, but it is not sticky.
We usually use the word sticky to talk about sweet things such as melted caramel or honey.
納豆はとても独特な食感よね。
納豆は”sticky”や”slimy”、”gooey”を使うわ。
山芋は”sticky”とは言わず、”slimy”か”gooey”と表現します。
キャラメルや蜂蜜のような甘い食べ物の場合は、”sticky”と言うわね。

So next time when you introduce Japanese foods to foreigners, you can try to use these words as well.
