“Can Reading In English Be Good For Your Speaking and Listening Skills,Too?”
英語で読むことは、スピーキング力やリスニング力にも役に立つ？

At first, it might sound strange to say that *reading* in English is also good for your *conversation* skills.
However, in recent years, a lot of research has been done about the benefits of “Extensive Reading” for foreign language learners.
一見、英語で「読むこと」が「会話力」に役に立つとは考えにくいかも知れませんね。
しかし近年、多くの研究者は多読は外国語を学ぶ人達にとって効果があると発表しています。

Obviously, reading in English is good for your *reading* skills!
But you probably want to improve your *speaking* and *listening* skills.
So why take the time and energy to read in English?
英語を読むことは、もちろん読解力にはとても良いことなのです！
でも、恐らく皆さんはスピーキングやリスニング力を改善させたいですよね。
では、なぜ「読む事」に時間と労力を費やすのが必要なのでしょうか？

One reason is that reading is *good for your vocabulary!*
Many years ago,my professor of teaching second languages said: “To really learn and remember a new vocabulary word, you need to *use* it about 4 or 5 times.”
The problem is that many people in Japan don’t have the chance to speak in English every day.
However, they CAN read in English every day! By reading lots of interesting material, you greatly increase your exposure to English vocabulary words.
読むことは語彙（ボキャブラリー）力をあげるのに役に立つからです！
何年も前に第二言語を教えてくれた私の教授は、「新しい単語を身につけるのには最低4～5回は使わないとダメ」と言っていました。
問題なのは、日本に住む多くの人達は英語で話す機会が日常的にないということ。
しかし、読むことは毎日できます！
様々な書物を読むことで、単語力を増やすのにはとても良い方法なのです。

Think about it. Usually, when you read something, it’s about a specific topic.
Therefore, words related to that topic will often come up several times in that reading passage.
Experiencing a vocabulary word several times *in context* is much better than just memorizing huge lists of words that will be quickly forgotten!
考えてみてください。大抵、皆さんが何かを読む時、それはある特定の話題についてだと思います。
ですので、話題に関連する単語は読み進める中で、何回か出てきますね。すぐに忘れてしまうであろう膨大な単語リストをただ覚えるよりも、
本文の中に何度か出てくる単語を学ぶ方が良いのです。

Another reason to do extensive reading is that it *improves your general language competence*.
The more time you spend reading English* that you can understand well,* the more your brain gets “used to” the structures ofEnglish grammar.
This is not a “break down and translate each sentence,phrase, and word” approach, although that has its place at times.
This is more of a “dive in and submerse yourself in the language” approach.
(Of course, if you want to be a good speaker and listener of English, you need to spend plenty of time speaking and listening!
However, extensive reading is still a great way to improve your general “innate” understanding of the language, and in the end, that’s going to help your speaking and listening, too.)
もう1つの広範囲を読むということの理由は、一般的な言語力を改善するのです。
英語を読むことに時間を費やすことは、昔にやった文法構造なども脳は思い返すことができるだけでなく、更に理解を深めるのです。打ち破ったりそれぞれのフレーズを訳したりすることでアプローチできるわけではない、だけれどもたまにできたりする。これはもっと言語の奥深くまで皆様自身入り込んでいくことでアプローチできます。（もちろんもしも皆様がもっと話せて、聞けるような人になりたいなら、スピーキングとリスニングにたくさんの時間を費やすこと！でも、多読をすることは言語を理解する本質を改善する一番よい方法です。それに最終的にはスピーキングとリスニングを助けることにもなるんですよ。

Remember, though, that extensive reading is probably very different from the type of English reading you have done in the past.
覚えておいてください、「多読」はあなたが過去に習ったリーディングとは少し異なります。

To do extensive reading, be sure to follow these rules:
多読をする上で、これらのルールを守って下さい

(1) Choose a book that is NOT hard for you. You should be able to understand almost 98% of the vocabulary!
That means you’ll read a new word only about two times out of every 100 words.
Also, the grammar forms should be ones that you already understand, too.

(1) 難しくない本を選ぶ事。単語の98%は理解できるレベルの物が良いでしょう！つまり、100の単語の中で2つほどの新しい単語を覚えるペース。文法的にもあなたが理解できる程度が良いでしょう。

(2) Choose a book that is INTERESTING for you!
(2) あなたにとって興味のある本を選ぶ事！

(3) For the most part, DO NOT use a dictionary! Try to understand new words from the context.
If you can’t understand a few words, don’t worry about it. Just keep on reading!
(3) 辞書を基本的に使わない事！新しい単語に出くわしたら、その場面や使い方から意味を推測して下さい。理解できない場合は、心配せずに読み続けること！

(4) Read A LOT! You don’t have time, right? I know!!! But I bet you could read during your daily train commute to and from work!
In Japan, we spend a lot of time on the train, so if you read every day on the train, you could really improve a lot in a year!
(4) たくさん読むこと！忙しいあなたでも、通勤時では必ず読めるはず！日本での生活は、電車の中で過ごす時間はとても多いですね。毎日電車の中で読めば、一年では上達の程度も期待できます！

You may think it’s difficult to find a book that is interesting yet not too hard. However,
if you check out these websites, you should be able to find something just right for you!
あなたのレベルに合った、しかも面白い本を探すのは難しいかもしれません。下記のサイトを見れば、きっとあなたにぴったりの本も見つかるはずです！

Just remember to pick books that follow the rules above, and you should do fine and have an enjoyable reading experience!
