The Holiday Season is upon.
Even though Japan doesn’t celebrate Thanksgiving in November, it’s always good to be thankful for what you have today!

ホリデーシーズンがやって参りました。
日本では11月のサンクスギビングデーをお祝いする習慣はないけれど、私たちが取る食事に感謝の気持ちを持つ事が大切です！
美味しい七面鳥が手に入ったらそうしてみてね。

Usually everybody in the US have a big Turkey dinner and pig out.
They all return to work a little heavier than when they left.
アメリカでは、サンクスギビングの日に七面鳥をメインとした大きな食事を楽しみます。感謝祭が終わると、みんなは体重が少し増えて仕事に戻ります。

In New York City, they have a famous parade called the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade that everybody comes out to see.
It’s when they have the big balloons floating through the city.

ニューヨーク市では、有名な「メイシーズ・感謝祭パレード」が開かれます。
これにたくさんの人が集まり、大きな風船のキャラクターたちが道を浮遊しながら町を周ります。

After thanks giving we have Christmas.
As some of you know, Christmas is done very differently than in Japan.
Christmas is mostly for couple to celebrate their love on Christmas Eve (24th).
For those that are single, it’s a day to drink. A lot!

感謝祭の後はクリスマスがきますね。
皆さんも知っている通り、日本のクリスマスの祝い方はアメリカと大きく異なります。
日本では、カップルたちがクリスマスイヴに二人の愛を祝うことが多いです。
独り身の人の場合、酒を飲む日かもしれません。たくさんね！

But in the States, we gather as a family, and have quality family time!
We prepare presents for everybody in the family.
Your Uncles, Aunts, Cousins, Nieces, Nephews … etc.
I hope that everybody gets a wonderful present from somebody special.
If not, treat yourself to a wonderful present!
That’s what I do.
しかしアメリカでは、家族同士が集まって時間を過ごすのが主流です。
叔父や伯母さん、甥っ子や姪っ子など･･･。
ひとりひとりにプレゼントを買うのです。
皆さんも、特別な誰かからプレゼントを貰えるといいですね。
もしそうじゃない場合は、自分にご褒美としてプレゼントを買って下さい！
僕はそうしてます。

Then come New Years!
The time to go out and celebrate.
People go out to see the fireworks and usually drink all night!
Yes people do drink all night in Japan but usually at home.
Some places also have parades for New Years.
そして、新年がやってきます！
お出かけをして、お祝いをする時。一晩中お酒を飲んだり、花火を見に行ったり。
そうです、日本でも朝まで飲む人もいますが、家で飲むのが多いかもしれません。

In Philadelphia, there is The Mummers Parade.
フィラデルフィアでは「ママーズ・パレード」というのがあります。

Who and what are Mummers?：「ママーズ」とは誰なのか？何なのか？
To define them simply, Mummers are costumed entertainers welcoming in the New Year. Some of the earliest mummers date back to early Egypt, pagan Rome and Greece, England, Germany, and France.
Historically, Mummery has influenced customs and perpetuated many interesting traditions.
簡単に説明すれば、「ママーズ」とは新年を迎えるために集まるコスチュームを着たエンターテイナーです。
「ママーズ」の歴史は古く、起源はエジプト、ローマ、ギリシャ、イギリス、ドイツ、フランスまでさかのぼり、歴史的には様々な風習や伝統に見受けられます。

Every nation had its festivals at one time or another, each marked by parades and displays of fancy costumes.
All of these cultures passed along their traditions from generation to generation, and eventually these traditions were brought to America by immigrants.
世界中の国々では必ず、新年をお祝いする祭り事を行います。
これらは、それぞれ独特の風習や華麗なコスチュームをお披露目するのですが、アメリカでは移民が移住してきたときに、ヨーロッパから代々伝わってきた文化がそのまま形になったのが「ママーズ」です。

The Philadelphia Tradition：フィラデルフィアの伝統
The tradition of Philadelphia Mummery started in the late 17th century as a continuation of the Old World customs of ushering in the New Year.
Mummery in America is as unique to Philadelphia as Mardi Gras is to New Orleans.
フィラデルフィアで見られるママーズの伝統は、新年を迎えるため昔の人々が伝統を受け継ぐ形で17世紀に始まりました。
フィラデルフィアのママーズ祭は特に有名で、ニューオーリンズのマルディ・グラ（告解の火曜日）に匹敵するくらいなのです。

For example, the Swedes were Philadelphia’s first settlers.
When they came to Tinicum (area name), just outside of Philadelphia, they brought their custom of visiting friends on “Second Day Christmas”, December 26.
フィラデルフィアに最初に移住してきたのはスウェーデン人でした。
この移民たちが当時、郊外のチニクムという土地にやってきた時、彼らは「二日目のクリスマス」という風習も行ったのです。
これは、クリスマスの次の日である12月26日に行う伝統で、友人の宅にお邪魔したりして楽しむことです。

Later they extended their period of celebration to include New Year’s Day, and welcomed the New Year with masquerades and parades of noisy revelers.
この祭事をさらに延長させて、元旦の日を含めて進化した祭事の事を「ママーズ」の伝統と言います。仮面をつけたエンターテイナーがパレードを行うのが基本です。

Most people carried firearms for protection in those early days of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and it did not take long before pistols and muskets joined with bells and noisemakers to create the sound of a New Year.
当時、ペンシルバニア州のほとんどの人は自分の身を守るためにライフルやピストルを持っていました。これが自然と祭りの時に使われるようになり、新年にライフルを空に撃つ人を「新年・シューター」と呼ぶようになりました。現在、「ニューヨーク・シューターズ・ママーズ協会」の由来はここにあるのです。

Those who “shot in” the New Year became New Year’s Shooters, and thus the name much later evolved to officially become the New Year’s Shooters and Mummers Association.
Groups would travel from house to house, sing songs, and perform dances — all to be rewarded with food and drink.
新年にライフルを空に撃つ人を「新年・シューター」と呼ぶようになりました。現在、「ニューヨーク・シューターズ・ママーズ協会」の由来はここにあるのです。
人々は、グループになって家から家へと訪ね、歌を歌ったり踊りを披露したり、食べ物を分けてお祝いしました。

By the 1870’s, what had been an uncoordinated group of neighborhood celebrations turned into an area-wide parade with two main groups of participants: Fancy Dress and Comic clubs. The City of Philadelphia finally sponsored and organized the first official Mummers Parade on January 1, 1901.
1870年代の頃には、2つの仮装するグループであるファンシードレスとコミッククラブ存在し、地元でしか行われなかったこの祭事が、地方へと拡大しました。
そして、1901年には、ついにフィラデルフィア市が主催することとなったのです。

Philadelphia Mummers of Today：今日のフィラデルフィアのママーズ
The Philadelphia Mummers of today total over 10,000 marchers.
The parade is still held on New Year’s Day, with four distinct divisions: Comic, Fancy, Fancy Brigade and String Band.
近年のフィラデルフィアママーズは一万人の参加者を超えます。
元旦の日に行われ、四つの部門に分けられています：コミック、ファンシー、ファンシー大隊、そしてストリング・バンドです。

Comic division clubs lampoon modern day local and national political and social themes. The Fancy division clubs wear large, ornate costumes, carrying back pieces and performing with floats and props.
コミック部門では、全国や地元で話題になっている政治的・社会問題を批評します。ファンシー部門は、豪華で大きなコスチュームを着て、支柱や浮き輪を使って演出をします。

The Fancy Brigade division clubs also wear large, ornate costumes, and perform intricate dances and drills with elaborate props.
The String Band division clubs not only wear elaborate costumes like the Fancy and Fancy Brigade divisions, but also drill and perform playing musical instruments.
ファンシー大隊も同じようなコスチュームを着て、細かな踊りや動きをして観客を驚かせます。
ストリングバンドは、ファンシー部門やファンシー大隊と同様、豪華な衣装を着ながら楽器を演奏し、振り付けをも披露します。

Parade rules do not permit the use of brass instruments in a String Band; the instrumentation is exclusively saxophones, banjos, accordions, violins, bass violins, and percussion instruments.
パレードの規則として、金管楽器の演奏は許されていません。そのため、楽器はサクソフォン、バンジョ、アコーディオン、バイオリン、ベースバイオリン、そして打楽器のみを用います。

Mummers String Bands are known, not only for the unique sound, but also for their elaborate costumes. Brilliant materials, glitter, sequins and feathers are all combined to make the showy costumes.
Traditionally, band members, wives and friends made the costumes.
Today, professional designers and costumers are utilized.
彼らは、独特の音を奏でるだけではなく、有名で派手なコスチュームとしても知られています。羽の着いた衣装、シークインなどのキラキラと光る素材などがトレードマークです。昔は、参加者本人、もしくはその家族が作ることが多かったのですが、最近はプロのデザイナーによる衣装が使われます。

In Philadelphia, the cost of costuming an average 64-piece band is between $30,000 and $80,000, with the captain’s costume costing as high as $10,000.
フィラデルフィアのパレードでは、約64名のバンドの衣装を作るのにかかる費用は$30,000から$80,000（300万円から800万円くらい）です。
キャプテンの着る衣装の費用は高く、$10,000（100万円くらい）な物もあります。

There are eighteen String Band organizations that exist today.
Every year, each String Band selects an annual theme, and debuts their new music and costumes in the Philadelphia New Year’s Day parade.
The marching leader of the band or Captain makes their elaborate debut doing the “2 Street Strut”.
現在、18ものストリングバンドの団体が存在し、彼らは毎年テーマを決めて、フィラデルフィアのパレードで新作の音楽と衣装をお披露目するのです。
各チームのキャプテン（もしくはリーダー）は「２ストリート・ストラット」という独特のステップでデビューします。

People from the “City of Brotherly Love”(Philadelphia’s nickname) know the excitement of a Mummers performance, but the Mummers also preserve that sense of nostalgia and tradition.
ママーズパレードは、「兄弟愛の街」とも呼ばれるフィラデルフィアの人々にとって楽しみなものであり、懐かしさと伝統を守る一つの習慣でもあるのです。
