The island of Saipan is owned by the United States, and is part of the
North Mariana Islands.

After
working hard for the last year, I decided to go to Saipan for 8 days after Golden Week, to recharge my batteries.

サイパンはアメリカの自治領で、北マリアナ諸島の一部。

昨年から一生懸命働いたから、燃料補給の為、ゴールデンウィーク後の8日間、
サイパンに行くことにしたんだ。

 

The flight was about three hours, and it was dirt cheap!

I chose Saipan over Hawaii because I heard "there is nothing to do there".

I didn't want any city, noise or even shops. I just wanted beach.

And beach I got.

The rumours were true.

3時間のフライトで、とっても安かった。

「何もすることがない」って聞いたから、サイパンを選んだ。

街や騒音、お店さえ必要なくて、ビーチだけを求めて行った。

噂は本当だった。

 

There is nothing to do in Saipan.

サイパンでは何もすることがないんだ。

 

I stayed in the Fiesta hotel.

It was alright, but the WiFi was a joke.

The building was a bit old.But it's not a bad place to rest your head for next to nothing.

I complained about the rubbish WiFi and they
upgraded me to an ocean-view room.

They also let my Japanese buddy stay for free.

フィエスタホテルに泊まって、まあまあだったけど、WiFiは全然使えなかった。

建物は少し古かったけど、何もしないで頭を休めてるのには
悪い場所じゃなかったよ。

WiFiの事で文句を言ったら、
オーシャンビューの部屋にアップグレードしてくれて、僕の日本人の連れを無料で泊めてくれたんだ。

 

The "Micro Beach" outside of our hotel, in the district of "Garapan", was beautiful.

Pure-white sand
hugged by blue and turquoise sea.

The weather was scorching – 30ºC.

It was so incredibly relaxing to lie in the sea and let the blended cool-warm water wash over you.

ガラパンにあるホテルの外のマイクロビーチは綺麗だった。

真っ白な砂がターコイズの海を包み込んでいた。

灼熱の３０℃。

海に横たわって、冷たいような暖かいような海の水にさらされるままになって、本当に気持ちが良かった。

 

Walking in the sand as the waves tickled your toes wasn't bad either –

it was as soft a pillow.

Little fishies darted through the water all around.

波打ち際を歩いて、足が波にくすぐられるのも悪くなかった。

砂は枕みたいに柔らかかった。

小さな魚が水の中を過ぎっていった。

 

 

Just off the beach was the famous "Managaha" island that was once voted in the world's top-three beaches in a prestigious ballot.

Managaha is basically "The Poor Man's Maldives".

It looks breathtaking from distance, but on the island the sand is mixed with shells and coral which isn't as soft as you'd
imagine.

 

次は世界トップ３のビーチに選ばれたマニャガハ島へ。

マニャガハは要するに「一時休憩」の場。

遠くからだと、本当に感動的。
でも砂浜は貝殻とサンゴが混じっていて、想像するより柔らかくない。

 

 

 

 

I went snorkeling for the first time there which was pretty damn interesting.

A fish attacked me but, don't worry, I survived.

Coral is pretty weird and sharp too.

In the picture, that's my Japanese friend who visited me for three days.

Everyone thought she was my wife and cracked jokes about us. Justfriends, I swear!

そこで初めてシュノーケリングをしたんだけど、すごく楽しかった。 

魚が僕に向かってきたけど、
心配しないで！なんとか生き延びたから。

サンゴがすごく変な形で尖ってた。
写真のコは僕の日本人の友達で、３日間遊びに来たんだ。

皆、彼女を、僕の奥さんだと思って、僕達をからかったりするんだけど、誓って、ただの友達なんだ。

 

 

 

 

 
 

 

 

 

I also went snorkeling in the middle of the ocean.

I was very worried I would be eaten by a gigantic tiger shark.

Luckily, nothing ate me.

That night I ate a lot of sashimi at the BBQ beach buffet to get revenge on the fish that attacked me.

海の真ん中でシュノーケリングもした。

大きなイタチザメに食べられないか
心配だったけど、ラッキーな事に
誰にも食べられなかったよ。

その夜、僕にかかってきた魚たちへのリベンジとして
BBQビーチビュッフェで刺身をいっぱい食べてやった。

 

Sunset is my favourite time in Saipan.

Everything turns to silver and the sky runs with melted orange.

夕焼けはサイパンの中でも好きな時間だった。

全てが銀色に変わっていき、
空はオレンジに溶けていった。

 

 

 

Saipan shops are weird.

There are mostly American grills, but there are also tons of shops named after Japanese places.

For example, in the picture you can see the "Roppongi Karaoke".

There are also Japanese restaurants actually built by Chinese people.

I thought that Saipan should forget about making poor imitations of other country's treasures and promote their own culture, as it would be a lot healthier for their economy and more absorbing and worthwhile for visitors.

サイパンのお店は少し変なんだ。

ほとんどはアメリカングリルの店なんだけど、
同時に日本の地域の名前のついた店もたくさんあるんだ。

例えば、写真にもあるけど、「六本木カラオケ」とかね。

中国人がつくった日本食レストランもあるよ。

経済的にも健全で、観光客に対して興味深く、価値のあるものにするためにも
サイパンは他の国の偽物を作るのを止めて、自分達の文化をもっと奨励するべきだと思うな。

 

 

 

 

 

 

MyJapanese friend took many photos of the incorrect Japanese – she found it hilarious.

The mascot of Saipan that you can buy in convenience stores is the "Saipanda".

僕の日本人の友達は、間違った日本語を写真に撮って、大笑いしてた。

サイパンのコンビニで買えるマスコットは「サイパンダ」！

 

My favourite hangout in Saipan was Godfather's beach bar.

Here you can kick back and watch the sunset with some ice cold cocktails and junk food.

A group of American girls started buying me drinks on one night, but luckily I escaped unharmed.

僕の好きだった遊び場はゴットファーザービーチバー。

ここでは、ゆっくりしながら冷たいカクテルとジャンクフードで夕焼けを眺める事が出来るんだ。

アメリカ人の女の子達が僕にドリンクを奢ってくれたりしたけど、無事に逃げ出す事が出来たよ。

 

 

 

 

 

There are mostly Chinese, Japanese and Russian people in Saipan.

There were many old Russian gangsters with beautiful, perfect girlfriends about 20 years younger than
them.

I think I was the only English person there.

サイパンには中国人、日本人、ロシア人が多かった。

自分たちより２０歳位若い、綺麗で完璧な女の子達を連れた、年配のロシア人達もいたよ。

イギリス人は僕一人なんじゃないかと思うよ。

 

My main mission in Saipan was to get a tan, so I could become the first English gyaru-o.

I nearly succeeded, but in the end I just ending up with strange burn marks on my body.

Maybe next time?

サイパンでの最大のミッションは日焼けすること。

イギリス人の最初のギャル男になりたいんだ！

結構上手くいったけど、結局は身体に変な日焼けの後の残っただけになった。

次回にまた挑戦かな。
