There are different beliefs why New York became known as the Big Apple.
ニューヨークがビッグアップルとして知られるようになった理由については諸説あります。
This reference for New York is believed to have started around the 1920’s, a time when horse racing was popular. There were many horse racing tracks in New York. In the horse racing world, the word “apple” meant the prize that was awarded to the winners. It is a rumor that one writer for a popular New York City newspaper overheard some stable hands from New Orleans call New York City the “Big Apple” so he named his column about the New York City races “Around the Big Apple.” Many jockeys from other states aspired to race in the “Big Apple”, where the prizes were very high.
この説は、競馬がとても人気になった1920年代に始まったと言われています。当時、ニューヨークには数多くの競馬場がありました。競馬の世界では、”アップル”は勝者に与えられる賞金のことを意味します。ニューヨーク市の有名な新聞社の一人の記者が、ニューオリーンズではニューヨークでの安定した賞金の出る試合をビッグアップルと呼んでいるという事を耳に挟み、ニューヨークでのレースに関する自分のコラムを”ビッグアップルの周りで”と名付けたと言われています。これで、他州から多くのジョッキー達が、”ビッグアップル”でレースをしたいと集まったのです。そう、とても高い賞金が出される場所ビッグアップルで。
By the 1930’s, jazz musicians helped to spread the name “Big Apple” in reference to New York City. “Big Apple” was the name of a popular jazz night club in Harlem. “The Big Apple” is the title of a short film that featured Harlem’s top ballroom dancers. A famous bandleader used“Big
Apple” in a book that was published to refer to the big town, Harlem.

The term “Big Apple” was forgotten by the 1970’s until a man from the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau got the idea to revive it to attract tourists to the city. Since that time New York City has become widely known as the “Big Apple”.
この”ビッグアップル”という言葉は、1970年代までに忘れられてしまっていましたが、ニューヨークの役所と官庁が、旅行者を引き付ける言葉として復活させようとしたのです。この事から、ニューヨーク市は、”ビッグアップル”として世に広く知られることとなったのです。
