Today, I would like to share my thoughts on the two big cities that I have lived in during my life; Tokyo and Toronto.

Both of these cities are the biggest cities in their respective countries.

However, when compared head-to-head, one hardly seems like a "big" city at all.

今日は、今まで僕が住んだことのある大きな都市：東京とトロントについて、僕の考えをみんなにシェアしようと思うよ。

これらの都市はどちらもそれぞれの国では一番大きな都市だよね。

だけど、直接比べてみたとき、一つはとても「大きい」都市とは思えないんだ。

First off, let's take a look at perhaps the biggest contrasting aspect of these cities; public transportation.

If you would kindly look at the images below, you will see train maps of Toronto (Top) and Tokyo (Bottom).

まず、これら都市のおそらく一番大きな比較要素となる公共の交通機関を見てみよう。
下の図をご覧いただくと、トロント（上）と東京（下）の電車の路線図がありますね。

I know, I know, the picture on the left does not look like a train map, but I assure you, that is what the citizens of Toronto who don't own cars use to get around town.

This is why the majority of people in Toronto rely on cars for their daily commute.

The trains are unreliable and downright inconvenient.

What happens when everyone drives instead of using public transportation? (see below)

上の図は路線図のようには見えないのは分かっているよ。でも、これは自分の車を持っていないトロント市民が街を移動する手段として使っているものなんだ。

これがトロントのほとんどの市民が毎日の通勤を車に頼っている理由なんだよ。電車は頼りにならないし、明らかに不便だからね。 誰もが公共の交通機関を使わず車を運転すると何が起こるかな？（下を見てください）

That is Toronto's beloved Highway 401.

It is a great way to travel east and west just north of downtown, unless you plan on commuting between the hours of 7:00am-11:00am and 14:00pm-20:00pm.

Tokyo's train system is one of the first things that I fell in love with when I moved to Japan.

It makes commuting anywhere in the cityapiece of cakeat a relatively low cost.

There are also a few options that commuters can use to lower that cost (commuter pass and book of tickets).

Overall, I give Tokyo a slight leg up over Toronto in the public transportation department.

これはトロントでもみんなが好んで利用するハイウェイ401だよ。

午前7時から11時と午後2時から8時の時間帯をのぞいて、東と西、ダウンタウンの北へ移動する手段として一番なんだ。

東京の電車システムは、日本に移り住んで僕が大好きになったものの一つだよ。

比較的安い金額で街のどこへでも簡単に移動できるし、通勤者が更に安い金額で利用できるよう定期券や回数券のようにいくつかオプションもあるよね。

全体的に、公共の交通期間に関してはトロントよりも東京が勝っていると思うよ。

Next up: population.

In this category, Tokyo holds a slight advantage, with a population of about 8.9 million people, compared to the 2.6 million who reside in Toronto (a difference of 6.3M).

Some people feel uncomfortable being so close to so many people.

Personally, I have no problem with it.

But I understand that many people don't like feeling like they arepacked like sardinesin the trains during the morning and evening rush hour.

Because I am comparing the grandiosity of each city and not my own personal preference, I have togive the nod, once again, to Tokyo.

次は人口について。

このカテゴリーでは、約890万の人口の東京が、約260万のトロント人口と比べると（630万の違いで）優位に立っているよ。

中にはあまりにたくさんの人が近すぎて居心地悪く感じる人もいるよね。

その点は個人的に、僕は気にしないんだ。

でも多くの人が通勤・帰宅ラッシュの時に電車の中ですし詰め状態になることが好きじゃないということは、僕も理解できるよ。

ここでは僕の好みでなく、客観的にふたつの都市を比べているので、ここでも東京を推すことにするよ。

Finally, let's take a look at tourism.

Again, the tallies are very close, but in the end, Tokyo winsby a whisker.

Recently, Toronto has been welcoming 21 million visitors on an annual basis (this includes both foreign and domestic travelers) whereas Tokyo receives approximately 425 million guests.

最後に観光旅行を見てみよう。

これもまた大差はないんだけど、最終的にはかろうじてで東京の勝ちだよ。

最近、トロントは年、国内外合せて2100万の旅行者を迎えているんだ。

それに対して東京では約4億2500万人の旅行者を受け入れている。

So there you have it, when comparing the sizes of these two cities, Tokyo clearly leaves Toronto in the dust.

Sorry Toronto, although you reign supreme in Canada, Tokyotakes the cakein this match-up.

これで分かったかな、ふたつの都市の大きさを比べた時、東京は明らかにトロントを圧倒しているよね。ごめんよ、トロント。カナダで一番でも、この対戦では東京が一番なんだ。
