One of the things I have noticed whilst living in Toyko is the
significant presence of ravens in and around the major cities in Japan.
僕が東京に住み始めて気付いたことの一つは、
日本の大きな街々にいるかなりの数のワタリガラス達の存在だ。


Combined with the resident buzzards of Kyoto and the ever encroaching
population of Kites(tonbi) in the Kamakura area it is wonderful to see
bird-life such as this flourishing in Japan.
京都に住みつくハゲタカや鎌倉エリアでのトンビの浸食的な個体数増加も併せて、
ワタリガラスの繁殖のような鳥の生態を日本で見られるのは素晴らしいこと だよ。

Why, I hear you ask, do you think this is a good thing?
Well, in the UK ravens have now become a protected species due to the
incessant hunting and destruction of their habitat that took place many
years ago as they were considered as much of a pest as they are now in
Japan. British people became concerned that ravens, crows and other
birds of this family carried disease and virus and were therefore considered vermin.
『なぜ？』とみんなは問うだろうね。『この繁殖が良いことだと思うの？』と。
そうだなぁ。イギリスでは、ひっきりなしの狩猟や、数年前―イギリスのワタリ
ガラスも日本にいるワタリガラスと同じくらい厄介者とされていた頃―に起こっ た
生息地の破壊によって、今ではワタリガラスは天然記念物となっているんだ。
イ ギリス人は、ワタリガラスやカラス、その他この種の鳥たちが、
病気やウイルスを持っていると心配し始め、これらの鳥は害鳥とみなすようになったんだよ。

Yet, as unsanitary as this bird may seem, they have reserved a deep-seated place
of honour amongst the pages of British history.
Once considered to be　one of the wisest of birds, ravens feature a lot
in mythology whereby they are shown to be great thinkers, problem solvers and sages.
この鳥は不衛生な鳥だと思われるかもしれないけれど、彼らはイギリス史書上でも、
確固たる栄光の地位を持っていたんだ。
かつて鳥の中でも最も賢いと考えられていたワタリガラスは、偉大な思想家であり、
問題を解決する能力を持つ賢人として神話の中にたくさん登場するんだ。


In Nordic cultures, the raven was a messenger of the old gods; in
particular they were a favourite of the Norse god, Odin, and were known for
giving him advice on matters of war.
However, in other cultures it has been considered as an ill-omen
and bringer of death.
北欧文化では、ワタリガラスは古き神々の使者とされていたんだ。
とりわけ北欧神話の神、オーディン(主神；知識・文化・戦争・死者の神)の寵臣で、
オーディ ンに軍事における助言を与えていたことで知られているんだ。
それとは対照的にほかの文化では、ワタリガラスは縁起が悪く、死をもたらすもの
とみなされていた。

The raven is able to mimic sounds from their environment, including
human speech which made them appear as very wise. Ravens can make up to 30 different
types of sound to communicate with each other, these range from calls of alarm
and panic to calls of flight and greeting: ravens actually say
‘hello’ and ‘good-bye’ to each other!
ワタリガラスは、人の会話を含めて、周りから聞こえる音をそっくり真似ること
ができるんだ。これも彼らがとても賢いという印象を与える理由なんだけど。
ワタリガラス達はお互いにコミュニケーションを図るため、30種類もの異なる音を
作り上げることができるんだ。これらの音は、警戒を知らせる音や恐怖の音か ら、
飛び立つ合図や挨拶の音にまで及ぶ。
ワタリガラスは実際に”こんにちは”と か”さようなら”と互いに言うことができるんだよ！

Ravens are carrion feeders, that means they feed off things which have
already died or they feed off garbage. another example of their amazing
vocal talents is that they have been known to call wolves and foxes to
kill smaller animals for them!
ワタリガラスは屍食動物なんだ。つまり、彼らはすでに死んでいる動物やごみを食べるんだ。
彼らの話す才能の驚くべき他の例を挙げるなら、彼らは、自分たち のためにオオカミやキツネを
呼び寄せ、さらに小さい動物を仕留めさせようとす ることでも知られているんだ！

My father and I run an animal hospital back in the UK for injured birds
and small animals, we have had many ravens through that we have hatched from eggs and
rescued as adults.all of them became well tamed and started to mimic our voices to greet
us when we came to feed them! I used to have one raven who would actually call my name
whenever it saw me!
僕と父はイギリスで、怪我をした鳥や小動物を助けるために動物病院に急いで駆けつけたり。
多くのワタリガラスも卵を孵らせ成鳥に育てるまで飼っていたりしたんだ。みんな飼いならされて、
餌をあげに行くと僕らに挨拶しようと、僕らの 声を真似るようになったんだ！
僕は、僕を見るたびに実際に僕の名前を呼ぶワタ リガラスも飼っていたことがあるんだよ！

Ravens are also well-known for being addicted to shiny objects. In fact,
one of our ravens stole my mum’s engagement ring when I was a child!
This greed for ‘gold’ has given rise to the theory that they do this to
‘impress’ female ravens! These birds have also been noted for making and playing
with their own toys, such as making balls out of twigs and sliding down snowbanks for
fun in the winter season!
ワタリガラスは、光るものに夢中になってしまうことでも知られているんだ。
事実、僕が子供の頃、僕らが飼っていたワタリガラスの一羽が、母のエンゲージリ ングを
盗んだんだ！この”金”への欲は、彼らが雌のワタリガラスに”自分を印象 付ける”ためにして
いるという理論をもたらしたんだ！彼らはまた、小枝でボー ルを作ったり、冬には雪だまりに
滑り込んで遊んだりするように、自分たちのお もちゃを作ったり、それで遊んだりするとも
指摘されているんだよ。


Despite their disheveled and creepy appearance I have developed a lot of
respect for these birds. Not only are they great survivors and thinkers but
they were once considered to be one of man’s best friends!
So next time you see a raven in the street or on your washing line
in the morning (@_@) just take time to listen to them and watch their
interesting behavior! Remember they were, and still are, one of the
smartest creatures on our planet.
彼らのむさくるしく気味悪い外見にも関わらず、僕はこの鳥たちに多大な敬意を
抱くようになっていった。
彼らは偉大な生存者や思想家であるだけでなく、人間 の一番の友であるとかつ
ては考えられていたんだよ！
だから今度、朝早くに道や干し竿にいるワタリガラスを見たときは、ちょっと彼
らに耳を傾け、彼らの面白い行動を観察してみて！
昔も今も、彼らが地球上で最も賢い生物の一つであるということをどうか覚えて
いてほしいんだ。
