I recently took a day off to see a special event—not a national holiday, but something extraordinary that happens only once in a blue moon: a total solar eclipse!
Unlike a vacation, which typically spans several days or weeks for leisure or travel, this was just one day away from work.
先日、国民の祝日でない日に、特別なイベントを見るために1日仕事を休みました。
ブルームーンのように珍しい（とても特別でめったに起こらない事）、つまり皆既日食です！
いつもはレジャーや旅行のために数日から数週間の休暇を取りますが、今回は仕事を1日休んだだけでした。

Many people across North America traveled to see the total eclipse, so it was a vacation for some.
I was lucky because I didn’t need to travel. I live right in the center of where the eclipse occurred.
Because it happened in the late afternoon, many schools gave a half-day off, so children wouldn’t walk home in the dark.
日食を見るために北アメリカを横断する人がたくさんいて、その人達にとっては長期休暇だったわね。
幸い、私は日食が見られるすぐ近くに住んでいるので、長い距離を移動する必要がなく、とてもラッキーでした。
日食は午後遅くの出来事だったので、子供たちが暗闇の中を歩いて帰らなくてすむように多くの学校は半日休みになりました。

The eclipse brought back memories of seasonal festivals in Japan. It was thrilling, but eerie too.
When I first arrived, it was warm. But the temperature quickly dropped by 10C. I needed to put on my coat.
Then the wind started to blow.
日食を見て、私は日本の伝統的なお祭りを懐かしく思い出しました。ワクワクするけど不気味な感覚もあるようなね。
日食を見る場所に着いた時は暖かかったのに、すぐに10度も気温が下がり、コートが必要だったわ。
そして風が吹き始めたの。

The shadows looked strange, and the wind suddenly stopped.
Darkness fell quickly and there was a 360-degree sunset.
影が不気味に見え、突然風が止まったんです。
あっという間に暗くなり、360度の夕焼けが見えました。

The total eclipse lasted for about 3 minutes. Everyone gasped and cheered.
皆既日食は3分ぐらい続いたわ。誰もが息をのみ、歓喜に包まれていました。

I recommend seeing a total solar eclipse in person.
It’s amazing! You can see a total eclipse in Japan in 2035.

すごいわよ！日本では2035年に皆既日食が見られるそうです！
