I enjoy watching movies a lot, and so I have many films that I like.

I don't have a particular genre that I favor; I'm pretty open to watching different kinds of films.

I do, however, tend to like certain actors and look forward to watching their films.

僕は映画を観ることが大好きで、好きな映画はたくさんあるんだ。

好きなジャンルっているのは特にはなくて、色んな種類の映画を観るのが好きなんだ。

でもね、ある俳優が好きで、彼の出ている作品を観るのを楽しみにしているんだよ。

 

My favorite actor of all-time is James Dean.

He only appears in three movies:

East of Eden (1955), Rebel Without a Cause (1955), and Giant (1956).

Although Rebel Without a Cause is his most famous film and a movie that I like very much, my favorite of the three is East of Eden. 

僕の大好きな俳優は、ジェームス・ディーン。

彼は３本の作品にしか出演していないんだ。

「エデンの東」（1955年）、「理由なき反抗」（1955年）、「ジャイアンツ」（1956年）だよ。

「理由なき反抗」はとても有名で、好きだけど、3作品の中でのお気に入りは「エデンの東」だよ。

 

 

 

 

East of Eden is actually based on a novel of the same name written by John Steinbeck (which in turn is apparently based on the biblical story of Cain and Abel).

I have not read the book but the movie is very powerful in its portrayal of a wayward son's search for love and approval from his father.

The story is set in the town of Salinas, California in 1917, during the period of World War I.
「エデンの東」は、実はジョンスタインベックによって書かれた同名小説が元になっているんだ。（そして旧約聖書の中のカインとアベルの物語がその小説の元になっているんだよ）

本は読んではいないけど、映画は、不安定な息子が、父親からの愛と、承認を求める姿を強く描いているんだ。

物語は1917年の第一次世界大戦中のカリフォルニア、サリナスの町が舞台だよ。

 

 

Cal (James Dean) and his brother Aaron are the sons of Adam Trask, a modestly successful farmer who is also the chairman of the local wartime draft board.

The movie focuses primarily on Cal whose angst about his relationship with his father drives the narrative development of the film and is its main source of tension and conflict.

Cal believes his father favors his brother Aron, who is portrayed as being a good, upright son who can do no wrong and is decent and kind to his brother.

The sons were told by their father that their mother had died and "gone to heaven" (implying she led a proper, Christian life)

カル（ジェームス・ディーン）とそのお兄さんのアーロンの父親はアダム・トラスクといって、徴兵選抜委員会の議長で、裕福な農民だったんだ。

カルは父親は兄のアーロンのことが好きだと思っているんだ。

アーロンは優しくて、真っ当な、悪いことなんて決してできない人間なんだよ。

カルとアーロンは彼らの母親は亡くなり、天国にいるよと聞かされていたんだ。

（敬虔はクリスチャンとして生きたということだね）

 

but in the beginning of the movie Cal discovers that his mother is running a brothel in the nearby town of Monterey.

He keeps this encounter secret from his father and brother and later convinces his mother to help him finance a business venture so that he can make a lot of money which he believes will impress his father.

でも映画の始めに、カルは母親がモントレー近くの町で売春宿を経営していることを発見するんだ。

彼はこれを父と兄には秘密にし、後にカルが事業を立ち上げる時に母親にお金を援助してもらえるよう説得するんだ。彼は大金を稼げば父親に見直してもらえると信じていたんだね。

 

The final key character in the story is Aron's girlfriend Abra.

Although initially devoted to Aron, Abra is sympathetic to Cal's struggle for paternal acceptance and she finds herself falling in love with him. In one of the movies most poignant scenes, Abra talks to Mr. Trask about Cal's suffering, describing perfectly Cal's situation:

この作品の最終的なキーパーソンとなるのはアーロンのガールフレンドのアブラなんだよ。

アブラはアーロンに忠実でいたのだけどカルの状況に共感し、さらには彼に恋をしてしまうんだ。

映画の中でとても印象的なシーンがあるよ、カルの痛みをアブラが父親に訴えるんだ。

 

 

Mr. Trask, it's awful not to be loved.

It's the worst thing in the world.

Don't ask me —

even if you could —

how I know that.

I just know it. It makes you mean and violent and cruel.

And that's the way Cal has always felt, Mr. Trask. All his life! Maybe you didn't mean it that way but it's true.

You never gave him your love.

You never asked for his. You never asked him for one thing.

Cal did something very bad and I'm not asking you to forgive him or bless him or anything like that.

Cal has got to forgive you for not having loved him or for not having shown your love.

And he has forgiven you.

I know he has. But you must give him some sign, Mr.

Trask…some sign that you love him or he'll never be a man.

All his life he'll feel guilty and alone unless you release him.

I love Cal, Mr. Trask.

And I want him to be happy and strong and whole.

And only you can do it.

Try! Please try!

Find a way to show him!

Ask for something.

Let him help you, so he knows you love him.

トラスクさん、愛されないというのはひどいことよ、

この世の中で最低のことだわ。

何故そんなことがわかるかなんて聞かないで。

ただ、私には分かるのよ。

意地悪で、暴力的で、残酷な気分になるのよ。

そしてそれはカルがいつも感じてきたことなのよ。

I won't go any further into how the story develops so as not to spoil the story for those who have not yet seen the film.

It is a very human story and the director, Elia Kazan, does a wonderful job presenting it for the big screen.

All the actors give excellent performances but without question James Dean shines most brilliant of all.

His every movement and expression goes into bringing the character Cal Trask to life and one cannot help but feel sympathetic to the "bad" brother's circumstances.

Dean's ability to express wounded vulnerability, internal conflict and pain, and the joys and troubles of youth is what gained him his fame and I am of the opinion that this movie is his best work.

この映画をご覧でない方の為にこれ以上は言わないでおくね。

この作品はまさに、ヒューマンストーリで、監督のエリアカーザンは素晴らしい映画作りをしているよ。

そして役者たちも最高のパフォーマンスをしていて、でもジェームスディーンの輝きは抜群だよ。

彼の動き、表現ひとつひとつがカルのキャラクターに息を吹き込み、観ている誰もが彼の状況に共感してしまうんだ。

傷ついた心、内面の矛盾や苦痛、そして若者の喜びや問題を表現するディーンの能力は彼に名声を与え、この映画は彼の一番の作品だと思うよ！
